After an easy 2-0 day on Thursday, we’re right where we want to be with the MLB weekend series lined up for attack. The pitching matchups are somewhat weak. Do we lean towards the overs as our betting picks?

Capper Catalano Record

159-135 -8.77 Units

Thursday was the perfect bounce back day with a St. Louis Cardinals victory sparked by the pitching of Adam Wainwright and the Pittsburgh Pirates played like champs without Andrew McCutchen and were our 2-Unit pick. I’m feeling good about today despite the lack of quality matchups.

Detroit Tigers (62-50) vs. Toronto Blue Jays (61-55)

Slowing Down…
The betting total for this game is 8.5 at 5 Dimes and either one of these teams has the potential to put up a 9 spot on the board at anytime. That said, the Detroit Tigers are coming off of a series against the Yankees in which their offense was ineffective and despite have some hard hitters in their lineup, the Toronto Blue Jays offense had nothing last night. A pitching matchup of Anibal Sanchez 8-5,3.37 vs. R.A. Dickey has the potential to be low scoring if both of these pitchers play to their potential.

Best Player in the Game?
Miguel Cabrera is one of the most confident swingers in recent times and earning a Triple Crown is no easy feat, but there’s something missing in his game this season.

Cabrera’s 17 home runs are very low in a season where dingers are down and despite knocking in 84 runs and batting .310, he just doesn’t carry that intimidating factor that he’s had in the past. Against R.A. Dickey’s knuckleball, I expect Cabrera to either crush one out of the park or go hitless; no in betweens. Dickey is a major “x- factor” in this game because the knuckleball is unpredictable.

Sanchez Time?
The Tigers have sent out 3 former CY Young winners in Max Scherzer, Justin Verlander, and David Price with mixed results due to an inept offense. Rick Porcello was nearly perfect and lost a 1-0 decision to the Yankees last night. Tonight, Anibal Sanchez (8-5, 3.37) gets his turn and he’s coming off of a brilliant game against Colorado in which he allowed just 2 hits in 7 innings and struck out 12 batters.

Look for both pitchers to be effective in this game as the offenses have stalled.

Free MLB Pick: Detroit/Toronto Under 8.5 (Most sportsbook list the total at 8. Grab 8.5 at 5 Dimes while it’s still available)

Washington Nationals (62-51) vs. Atlanta Braves (58-56)

Strasburg At Great Odds
This isn’t one of the best teams that the Atlanta Braves have sent out in recent times and they get to face strikeout machine Stephen Strasburg (8-9, 3.39). When you place the word “potential” on a pitcher, Strasburg is the guy that most people label that tag on.

Despite all of the support, Strasburg’s record speaks for itself, but he’s always capable of putting up an unhittable performance. This is a big game because there’s a 2 game swing involved. Washington currently leads the Braves by 4.5 games. The pressure is on Ervin Santana (10-6, 3.59) to pitch well at home.

8 Game Losing Streak
I’ve always labeled the Atlanta Braves as a team that finds ways to win despite putting up average numbers offensively. For a Braves team to be on such an extended losing streak is very rare. The offense has really been a killer for the Braves as they’ve managed a total of 18 runs during this 8 game losing streak.

Looking at Atlanta’s starting lineup, there’s not one player that’s a superstar that can win a game on his own. To the Braves credit, their top 7 hitters are all hitting in the .270-.280 range. Atlanta needs a Freddie Freeman or Justin Upton to have a huge game to bust out of this losing streak because Strasburg is overpowering and can be stingy when he’s in the zone.

You have to go with the better pitcher and against the team who can’t win a game. The MLB odds are more than appealing for Washington to subject Atlanta to their 9th consecutive loss.
