The Yankees have their brooms standing by for Thursday afternoon's game against the Orioles at home where they are favored on the MLB odds to finish a 3-game sweep.
Home run bats and solid pitching did the trick for the New York Yankees on Wednesday, putting them on the verge of sweeping the Baltimore Orioles out of the Bronx when the clubs conclude their set with an afternoon matchup.
The 4-3 win last night helped New York increase its lead in the AL East to 5½ games over the Toronto Blue Jays, the Yankees now turning to Masahiro Tanaka in today's 1:05 PM (ET) clash that leads off Thursday's MLB betting card. New York is chalked to complete the broom job with 5Dimes listing the pinstriped posse at -143 on its morning nickel line. Ubaldo Jimenez counters on the mound for Baltimore, the 8 run total for the contest generally priced a little higher to the 'under' at books charted by SBR's live baseball odds.
Tanaka Aiming For 3rd-Consecutive Win
After pitching well in Baltimore setbacks on the road to begin July, Jimenez got absolutely rocked the last time out in Detroit. Manager Buck Showalter had to yank him two outs into the fifth having already surrendered seven runs, three of the seven hits allowed leaving Comerica Park.
Orioles hitters gave Jimenez all the offense he needed when taking on the Yankees in mid-June at Baltimore. but he wasn't all that sharp (5 IP, 3 ER). His three appearances in the Bronx last season ended with the O's losing two of them while Jimenez combined to give up seven runs in 14.2 innings.
Tanaka hadn't exceeded 98 pitches in a start before his last two outings, both home wins for the righthander who burned through 114 tosses to beat Oakland and another 103 to top Seattle. He's seeing the Orioles for the first time this season, and didn't have much luck against them last year despite both assignments being quality starts. Tanaka went seven innings and allowed three runs in both games, New York coming out on the losing end each time has big home chalk (-160 and -215).
Umpire Notes, Mother Nature & A Free Pick
A favorite among 'under' bettors earlier this season, Todd Tichenor has shifted to the high side of the baseball odds his last three games as he prepares for his 17th plate assignment of 2015. He stood 3-10 O/U through the month of June, but all three of his July matchups not only went 'over' the totals, but shot past them with room to spare, 42 runs coming plateward on scoreboard tallies of 9, 6½ and 7½. Both of his games behind the dish at Yankee Stadium last year went 'over,' including a 14-5 Orioles rout of Ivan Nova and the New York 'pen.
It should be a great afternoon for baseball in the Bronx, the thermometer in the low-80s under clear skies and an 8-10 mph breeze (out to right). I happen to feel it's going to be a great afternoon to play New York on the run line for my free baseball pick.
MLB Pick: Yankees -1½ (+137) at 5Dimes
