A pair of capable right-handers will take the hill at the Coliseum Friday night, which will lead to a low-scoring affair between the New York Yankees and Oakland Athletics. Let’s take a closer look at the MLB betting odds for this American League matchup.

Road trippin’
New York is 4-2 on its current nine-game road trip, which includes a 6-3 victory over the Seattle Mariners as +104 underdogs Thursday, while going 'over' the betting total for the first time in four contests. The Yankees have scored four or fewer runs in 12 of their last 13 games, while they’ve averaged 4.19 runs on the road during the 2014 campaign.

MLB handicappers will find that the club has won both of its opportunities as underdogs of +150 to +175 when playing away from the Bronx.

Ahead of the pack
Oakland has built a 3.5-game lead in the AL West standings due to possessing a MLB-high plus-130 run differential, as it returns home from a 5-4 road trip versus the Los Angeles Angels, Baltimore Orioles and Yankees. The Athletics took two of three from the Bronx Bombers last week, with Yoenis Cespedes and Brandon Moss each leaving the yard two times.

Over the last two-plus seasons, the franchise is a disappointing 9-8 as home favorites of -175 to -200, with the 'over' going 10-7 in that situation.

Yankees starting pitcher David Phelps (1-4, 4.88 ERA) will be making his 17th appearance of the season—suffering a 8-4 road defeat to the Kansas City Royals last time out. The right-hander has held left-handed hitters to a .191 batting average this season, while righties check in with a .339 mark. Phelps has retired all 12 Athletics batters that he’s faced at this particular ballpark.

Athletics starting pitcher Sonny Gray (6-2, 2.83 ERA) was handed a 6-3 loss on the road to the Baltimore Orioles last Saturday, as he gave up a season-high five runs on four hits over just 5.1 innings of work. The right-hander is 3-1 with a 3.43 ERA in seven home appearances, with opposing hitters batting .271 against him (.166 on the road). Gray will be facing the Yankees for the first time in his career.

I’m going to recommend that readers play the total as one of their MLB picks, as the 'under' is 6-2 in the last eight meetings in this series when played in the Bay Area.
