To nobody’s surprise, the Pirates are a -113 betting favorite and the total is listed at 8.5 runs. A Jeff Locke (2-2, 3.54) vs. Josh Collmenter (8-5,4.03) pitching matchup leads me to believe that we can see a lot of offense in this game.

The Pittsburgh Pirates (57-50) have struggled all season long and suddenly have found themselves just one game behind Milwaukee in the loss column for the NL Central West Divisional lead. Tonight, they play a very winnable game on the road against a Arizona Diamondbacks (47-61) team that’s been awful at home. See who we like as our MLB betting pick.

First pitch is set for 9:40 pm ET tonight out in the desert at Chase Field in Phoenix, Arizona. You can see your favorite player such as Andrew McCutchen and Paul Goldschmidt battling it out on MLB TV.

A Bottle Rocket In July
Thanks to former sports great Bo Jackson for this description as it’s the perfect description for the way that leadoff hitter Josh Harrison is playing.

Harrison is a huge reason for Pittsburgh’s success as he’s hit a home run in 4 consecutive games. In his last 4 games, Harrison is 8 for 19 with 4 HR and 6 RBI. This has taken a lot of pressure off of Andrew McCutchen and provided the Pirates with a power source that they didn’t expect.

You wouldn’t think of the Pirates as one of the best offensive teams in baseball, but they rank in the top half of most offensive statistical categories and are number 1 in on-base percentage.

Getting on-base is such an important feature when a team has sluggers such as Andrew McCutchen, Neil Walker, and Pedro Alvarez. Add in the great improvement in Jordy Mercer’s game and Pittsburgh has a chance at winning the National League Central Division and being a major threat if they get into the post-season.

Arizona will have their hands full as this is a team that’s only 21-33 at Chase Field. The D’Backs took advantage of an uninspired Cincinnati Reds team yesterday, but Pittsburgh is a much more formidable team and the Diamondbacks bats will need to be out in full force.

Much like the Pirates and Andrew McCutchen, Paul Goldschmidt dominates all offensive categories on the Diamondbacks. At 19 HR, 69 RBI, and a .301 BA, Goldy will have his occasional dry spell, but his overall production speaks for itself.

This is a player that’s reaching base safely nearly 40% of the time. His splits are quite impressive in tonight’s matchup against the Bucs. Goldschmidt is a career 7 for 11 with 2 RBI against Pittsburgh and is 4 for 6 against Jeff Locke. This appears to be a very favorable matchup despite Goldschmidt’s recent slump.

Left-fielder, David Peralta, who has only seen 176 at-bats this season, but has made a major impact with Arizona, is 6 for 12 with 1 HR and 4 RBI against Pittsburgh. With Locke pitching, Peralta is another player that figures to be a possible factor in this game.

Arizona has some nice split stats against Pittsburgh, but the Pirates are the better team offensively and a good fielding team to compensate for their lack of quality pitching tonight. This game certainly means more to the Pirates, who have the superior team. Look for the Pirates to outclass the Diamondbacks in this lopsided matchup.
