The Los Angeles Angels (23-19) find themselves in an unusual spot this afternoon against the Tampa Bay Rays (19-25). They’re the home underdog against pitcher, David Price. See who we like as our betting pick.

First pitch is set for 3:35 pm ET this afternoon at Angel Stadium in Anaheim, California. This game can be seen on MLB TV.

5 Dimes Sportsbook lists the Rays as a massive -127 betting favorite and the total for the game is 8.

This is a bit surprising. Although the Rays have an edge in starting pitching as David Price (4-3, 4.02) squares off against relief pitcher, Matt Shoemaker (1-1, 3.86), of the Angels, Price hasn’t nearly been the pitcher that he’s been in the past and he faces an Angels lineup that has Mike Trout, Albert Pujols, and Howie Kendrick as the leaders.

Are the Angels a live dog at home in this spot?

Mike Trout
Even though the Angels are finally above .500, Mike Trout is off to a slow start. Big contracts appear to put pressure on players and the players usually underperform the next season. It happened to Albert Pujols and now to Mike Trout.

On the season, Trout is batting just .264 with 8 HR, 28 RBI, and 5 SB. This is supposed to be the face and future of baseball that we’re talking about.

Look for Trout to break out of his slump. When he and Bryce Harper were grouped together as rookies in which people were deciding “who was better”, Trout clearly won that battle and he’ll overcome his slump. He’s also a player that brings a lot to the table as one of the best defensive outfielders in the league.

The month of May has been very cruel to Mike Trout as he’s batting just .148 with 2 HR and 10 RBI. That said, this guy is a game-changer. He hit a 3-run walkoff home run against Tampa Bay on May 15th.

Los Angeles is coming off of a huge 6-0 victory over Tampa Bay on Saturday in which there were many contributors. Eight different players had hits and the bottom of the lineup in Iannetta, Green, and Jimenez were a collective 4 for 9 with 3 runs, 1 HR and 2 RBI. This is a fairly deep offensive team led by Howie Kendrick (.301) who has a very sharp eye at the plate.

Big-Time Pitcher?
Up until this season, David Price has been the ace of the Rays pitching staff with very few issues. He’s still the best pitcher on the Rays staff, but this season he’s encountered some trouble as his ERA is above 4.00.

This is a pitcher that can shut down a team and pitch complete game gems like he did in his last outing against Seattle. Price allowed just 1 run and 6 hits in 9 innings while striking out 12 batters.

The problem with Price this season is the couple of outings that he pitched poorly, he got rocked very hard by the Yankees and White Sox and overall he just hasn’t been as consistent as he was in previous seasons.

Just the same, Price has a major edge in this afternoon’s pitching matchup and that will greatly benefit Tampa Bay as he’s surrounded by an offense containing the like of James Loney (1 HR, 25 RBI, .305), Evan Longoria (4 HR, 22 RBI. 269), and Matt Joyce (3 HR, 20 RBI, .276). The individual numbers aren’t great, but this is a deep Rays team that can dominate a game.

Although they’re coming off of a very poor effort on Saturday, look for the Rays to get some revenge as David Price should come up big in this spot.
