Can the Tigers Robbie Ray turn in Clutch start tonight after just being recalled from the minors? Will the Pirates be able to take advantage of a golden opportunity at home versus an inexperienced 22-year old hurler? Read our betting opinion on the matter before making your MLB bets.

Inter-league Series between Top Playoff Contenders
The Pirates will host the Tigers today at PNC Park in Pittsburgh with the first pitch slated for 7:05 PM ET. At the time of this writing there was no money line or total posted due to the pitching change for the Detroit Tigers.

The Starters
The Tigers will go with 22-year old southpaw Robbie Ray who will be making just his 4th career MLB start. Ray was recently just called up from the Tigers AAA International League affiliate in Toledo where he went 7-5, with a 3.72 ERA, and a 1.47 WHIP. In 4-appearances with Detroit earlier this season which included 3-starts, Ray posted a lofty 4.70 ERA and 1.63 WHIP. He will be filling in for the scheduled starter Rick Porcello. The Tigers veteran was forced into action during Sunday’s 19-inning marathon loss at Toronto. Porcello ended up tossing 2.0 plus innings, threw 36-pitches, and was the eventual losing pitcher during the 6-5 loss.

The Pirates will counter with hard throwing right-hander Edinson Volquez. The Pirates veteran hurler has gone 3-0 against the money in his last 3-starts with a very good 2.65 ERA. As a matter of fact, Volquez has gone a very profitable 7-1 (+6.25 units) in his last 8 against the money with an outstanding 2.22 ERA.

Final Analysis
The Tigers will be at a distinct disadvantage in the starting pitching department in having to use an emergency starter (Robbie Ray) who was just called up from the minors. Their only solace will be is that they’re facing a banged up Pirates lineup. Edinson Volquez has been pitching extremely well for the Pirates, and should be the deciding difference in the outcome. There are a host of unknowns and uncertainties in this one, so my lean here is of the extremely slight variety, and goes the way of the Pirates.
