The Boston Red Sox have dropped their last 11 games in which Brandon Workman has made an appearance, which makes the Pittsburgh Pirates the obvious choice for your Thursday night MLB picks.

Futility at the Plate
Boston has averaged 2.8 runs and hit .213 in dropping seven of its last 10, while it has pushed across just a single baserunner across home plate in the first two games of this series, including a 9-1 setback as +147 road underdogs Wednesday.

Red Sox star David Ortiz has been on the bench the last two games due to the team playing in a National League ballpark, which is important to consider when making your MLB picks, but he’s expected to start at first base in the series finale.

Over the last two-plus seasons, the franchise is 3-6 as underdogs of +175 to +200 when playing away from Fenway Park, with the OVER going 5-3-1 in that situation.

There’s No Place Like Home
Pittsburgh has captured 11 of its last 13 series at PNC Park, which can’t be ignored when looking over the MLB odds, especially since it owns a 2.5-game lead over the Milwaukee Brewers in the race for the Senior Circuit’s second Wild Card spot.

The Pirates are averaging 5.8 runs and hitting .308 over their last 12 contests, while 2013 NL MVP Andrew McCutchen entered last night’s affair batting .421 in his previous 15 home games against American League opponents.

MLB handicappers will find that the club is 5-2 as home favorites of -200 to -225 since 2012, with the OVER going 4-2-1 in those seven opportunities.

Workman
Red Sox starting pitcher Brandon Workman (1-9, 5.27 ERA) suffered a 10-6 home defeat to the Baltimore Orioles last time out, as he allowed six runs (five earned) and six hits over three innings of work.

The right-hander is 1-3 with a 4.54 ERA in eight road appearances (six starts), with opposing hitters batting .226 against him (.282 at home).

Workman has fallen in defeat in each of his two interleague starts this season against the St. Louis Cardinals and Chicago Cubs.

Cole
Pirates starting pitcher Gerrit Cole (9-5, 3.92 ERA) is coming off back-to-back wins over the Chicago Cubs, including a 7-3 home victory last Friday—giving up three runs and five hits over six frames.

The right-hander is 4-1 with a 3.48 ERA in 10 home games, with opposing hitters batting .227 against him (.289 on the road).

In five career outings versus AL opponents, Cole has produced a 3-1 record and 3.16 ERA.

Prediction
I’m going to recommend that readers back the Pirates as one of my free picks, as they’ve captured 19 of Cole’s last 26 trips to the mound.
