San Diego isn't going to make the playoffs, but it can make a run at .500. The Padres will try to continue that push when they hit Phoenix for a three-game series with the Diamondbacks, starting Friday night (9:40 pm ET). Here's our take on this NL West clash, with free MLB picks on each contest.

Padres-D'Backs Betting Odds
In the early MLB odds Arizona and Josh Collmenter could be found at -110 for Friday's game at 5Dimes, while San Diego and rookie Odrisamer Despaigne could be gotten at +108 at Heritage. And most shops were listing the total on Friday's game at 8.5 runs.

Series Set-Up
Arizona just got swept four games in Washington this week, losing Thursday 1-0 on an error in the bottom of the ninth, extending its losing streak to six games. The Diamondbacks are 1-3-1 over their last five series, going 4-12 in the process.

San Diego, meanwhile, just dropped two of three games to the Dodgers in LA, losing to Clay Kershaw Thursday 2-1. The Padres have lost two series in a row and five of their last seven games.

So San Diego, at 59-67, sits in third place in the National League West, 11.5 games out of first place, while Arizona, at 53-75, is 18.5 games back.

Arizona leads this season series six games to three, with the totals going 3-5-1.

Friday's Starters
Collmenter (8-7, 4.31), by our tough accounting, is 6/21 on quality starts this year, but 0 for his last four. Last Sunday he gave up five runs in four innings against Miami, and over his last four starts he's allowed 17 runs through 18 innings.

On the season Collmenter has allowed 134 hits, including 17 homers, in 129 innings, walked 34 and struck out 87. Arizona, a team that's 22 games under .500 overall, is 13-8 in Collmenter's starts, with the totals going 9-11.

In his one start this season against San Diego, Collmenter allowed just one run and five hits through 5 1/3 innings of a 3-1 D'Backs victory back on June 28.

Despaigne (3-4, 3.28) is 6/10 on quality starts since joining the Padres rotation back in June, but just one for his last four. Last time out he got nicked for five runs in four innings against St. Louis, and over his last four outings he's given up 15 runs through 22 1/3 innings.

For the season Despaigne has allowed 54 hits in 60 innings, walked 23 and struck out 37. San Diego is 5-5 in games Despaigne has started, with the totals going 5-5.

In his one career start against Arizona, Despaigne gave up just one run and five hits in 6 2/3 innings of a 2-1 Padres victory back on June 29.

In the comparison of the bullpens in this series San Diego ranks No. 1 in ERA at 2.35, with 32 saves in 38 chances, while Arizona ranks 21st in ERA at 3.85, with 32 saves and 17 blown saves.

With the Sticks
San Diego still ranks dead last in the Majors in team OBP at .290 and in scoring at 3.3 runs per game, but since the All-Star break the Padres have averaged an NL-best 4.5 RPG.

Arizona ranks 25th in OBP at .304 and 22nd in scoring at 3.9 RPG. The Diamondbacks have been held to three runs or fewer in nine of their last 11 games.

Padres-D'Backs Betting Trends
Arizona is just 25-39 at home this season, but San Diego is 25-40 on the road.

The Padres have skewed toward the 'unders' this season by a lopsided 76-45 margin.

The totals have gone 30-30 in games played at Chase Field this season.

Injury Update
As far as MLB injuries go, Arizona is without slugger Paul Goldschmidt, who's gone for the season with a broken hand.

San Diego, meanwhile, is without SS Everth Cabrera, IF Yonder Alonso and OF Carlos Quentin.

Free MLB Pick for Friday
While Arizona is just playing out the string on this season, San Diego has a goal of reaching .500. And the Padres had been playing some pretty good ball as of late, until running into the Cardinals and Dodgers the last two series. So we'll go with San Diego for our free MLB pick on Friday's series opener.
