Giants and Padres in Series Opener at Petco Park
The Padres and Giants will open a three game series in San Diego tonight with the first pitch slated for 10:10 PM ET. These teams have split their ten meetings this season. San Diego has gone 15-8 versus San Francisco at Petco Park since 2013.
Tim Hudson makes his return from the 15-day disabled list to start tonight for San Francisco. Prior to going on the DL, Hudson was in poor form during his previous four starts, posting a lofty 5.48 ERA and 1.65 WHIP. The Giants 40 year old hurler has been shaky on the road this season, evidenced by a 5.35 ERA and 1.55 WHIP in six starts.
The San Diego Padres starter tonight will be Ian Kennedy, and he’s been a tough luck pitcher in recent starts. He’s gone just 2-4 on his last six team starts despite compiling an outstanding 2.62 ERA during that time. Unfortunately for Kennedy, the Padres scored a combined total of only 9 runs in those six games. Saying he’s been victimized by a lack of run support lately would be a vast understatement. In three starts versus San Francisco in 2015, Kennedy has a terrific 1.17 ERA. As a matter of fact, the veteran right-hander has made twenty-three starts against the Giants since 2010, and has a superb 2.38 ERA and 1.09 WHIP in those appearances.
Giants starting to Roll
San Francisco enters tonight riding a six game win streak. During this hot run they’ve averaged 7.2 runs and 13.8 hits per game. Yesterday their bats were cooled a bit as they amassed just 5 hits and 2 runs in completing a sweep of Arizona.
Padres look for huge Second Half
The Padres spent a lot of money during the offseason to upgrade the quality of their roster. However, those large expenditures haven’t translated into success on the field. They’ll enter this key NL West divisional series with a disappointing record of 43-49. On the bright side, San Diego has won their last four in a row, and Sunday ended up being an off day after their home game versus Colorado was postponed due to rain.
The deciding factor for me in what otherwise seems to be an even matchup is the starting pitchers. Ian Kennedy has pitched way better than his recent record indicates. On the other hand, Tim Hudson isn’t a shell of the pitcher that he once was, and making his first start tonight since June 26th also raises a red flag for me. I’m going with the home team for one of my MLB picks on Monday. Pinnacle currently possesses the most favorable price regarding a money line wager.
