NL East Showdown in the Big Apple
The Mets will host the Nationals at Citi Field in Flushing, New York with the first pitch slated for 7:10 PM ET. According to MLB betting odds the Nationals are a -125 money line road favorite and the total is set at 7.0.

The Starting Pitchers
The Nationals will go with Ryan Zimmerman on the hill tonight. The right-hander has gone 14-9 against the money this season with a stellar 3.06 ERA and a terrific 6:1 strikeout to walk ratio. The Washington hurler has displayed superb form over his last 3-starts by posting a 2.21 ERA, a 0.84 WHIP, and struck out 19 while walking just 1. However, he’s been shaky over his last 3-starts on the road and has a lofty 5.87 ERA in those outings. In 2-starts versus the Mets this season, Zimmerman has posted a 4.38 ERA.

The Mets will counter with the ageless 41-year old veteran Bartolo Colon. After it seemed his career was pretty much over due to constant injury issues, all he’s done is gone 34-20 against the money during the last 2-seasons. In 10-starts at Citi Field in 2014 Colon has posted a solid 3.21 ERA and compiled a 9:1 strikeout to walk ratio.

The Nationals Domination of the Mets
The Nationals have absolutely owned the Mets during the last 3-seasons winning 33 of the 46-meetings between these teams. They’ve even had a stronger upper hand at Citi Field going 18-4 against tonight’s opponent during that same 3-year span. This season they’ve taken 7 of the 9-games played versus their divisional rival including all 3 that were played in New York.

The Mets Last Stand
If the Mets have any glimmer of hope about staying in the NL East race, they must make up some ground in this series versus the first place Nationals. They entered this series 4th in the NL East, but are still within striking distance just 7.5 games behind the division leader. Going into this series the Mets are scheduled to play the Nationals 9 more times before the close of the regular season.

Final Analysis
I believe the starting pitching matchup tonight will be virtually even with all MLB betting factors considered. The clincher for me is that I believe the Nationals are inside the Mets heads due to their domination of their division rival in recent years, and although they’re a money line road favorite, the price is still cheap enough to command value.
