The Angels took Game 1 of their I-5 Series with the Dodgers, but they now have to go up against the best pitcher in baseball as heavy underdogs on the MLB odds for Game 2.

All of the drama in Monday's series opener between the Angels and Dodgers was pretty much gone after the top of the first inning. The Angels plated four before many of the 53,000-plus at Dodger Stadium had settled into their seats, and the only mystery after that was whether Halos pitcher Garrett Richards would finish the first shutout of his career.

Richards did go the distance in the 5-0 Angels victory, striking out nine and helping the bunch from Anaheim sneak to within a game of Oakland in the AL West race.

Game 2 of the series features an double-lefty duel on the mound, but that's basically where all comparisons between Hector Santiago of the Angels and Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw end. Kershaw delivers the game's first toss at 10:10 PM (ET), and SBR's live baseball odds list heavy -240 to -250 chalk on the Dodgers. The matchup also features a low 6 run total.

Chalk Lovers Love Clayton Kershaw
When you factor in how the game of baseball has changed the last 50 years, the comparisons between Kershaw and another LA legend, Sandy Koufax, are more than legitimate. In so many ways, what Kershaw has accomplished in a far more offensive-heavy era as Koufax pitched should leave fans suggesting Sandy's best almost stacks up to Clayton's, and not the other way around.

Best two stats for baseball bettors to pay attention to are despite the heavy chalk in his games, Kershaw backers are up 8.8 units (14-3, 3rd-best). The Dodgers have been priced below -150 during this 11-game win streak just once, and that was a -130 moneyline.

Santiago's only experience against the Dodgers came in the form of a relief appearance in a ChiSox jersey during 2012. A long reliever and swingman for the rotation at that point in his career, Santiago did get four outs without allowing a run or hit in the outing, The Newark native got off to a horrible start, the Halos losing each of his first seven assignments, but Santiago has been better of late, and coming out of a 3-0 month of July -- two wins in relief roles -- with a 3.12 ERA over 26 frames.

Umpire Notes, Final Thoughts & A Free Pick
After making his MLB umpiring debut earlier this season, Chris Segal has rapidly shown a tendency to the high side of totals, 12-6 O/U. This will be the Virginia native's first plate assignment at Dodger Stadium, but he has worked three games this year involving either the Dodgers or Angels, and all three finished 'over' the marks.

Richards obviously deserves much of the credit for Monday's outcome, but the Dodgers lineup also must shoulder part of the load for the club's third defeat in four August contests. Their bats have been sketchy in the second half, but I'm confident LA can bust out at least a little tonight vs. Santiago. Let's go with Kershaw on the run line with our free pick.

MLB Pick: Dodgers -1.5 (+100)

Season: 96-98 (-2.85)
