Padres batters pounded Braves pitchers Friday night, collecting 20 hits in a 10-1 laugher. Atlanta now looks to even the MLB odds set and halt a 4-game losing streak on Saturday.

The old 70s pop tune Slip Slidin' Away by Paul Simon might make a good song for the 2014 Atlanta Braves video. That's assuming the Braves can't pull themselves out of the funk they've fallen into this week.

Atlanta saw its losing streak pushed to four in a 10-1 loss to the San Diego Padres on Friday to begin this weekend set at Petco Park.  Tommy Medica fueled San Diego's onslaught with two homers among his five hits, and the Braves fell to fourth in the NL Wild Card standings with the setback.

If the MLB odds for Game 2 are any indication, Atlanta will see the misery come to an end in Saturday's 8:40 PM (ET) start. Ervin Santana is slated to take the mound for the Braves who are priced around -120 on the baseball betting board. Ian Kennedy takes his turn in the Padres' rotation with a 6 run total also on the card.

Starters' Home/Road Splits Suggest An 'Over'
Santana has been the stopper in Fredi Gonzalez's rotation since getting the nod to begin the second half, ripping off three consecutive victories during Atlanta's long homestand coming out of the break. The latest -- 8 IP, 0 ER, 11 K -- came against these Padres in Monday's getaway game at Turner Field to leave him 2-0 in three career assignments vs. San Diego with a 1.35 ERA (20 IP).

This will be only the second time Santana has pitched at Petco Park, and he's been less effective in 10 starts on the road (3-4, 4.00 ERA) than at home (7-2, 3.29 ERA).

Kennedy's name surfaced during the recent trade deadline rumors despite being out of action since July 23 with a strained oblique. The former USC standout enjoyed a fine month of July even though he was laid up at the end, winning three of his five outings with a 2.53 ERA. His home/road splits are just the opposite of Santana's, doing better away (5-4, 3.18 ERA) from pitcher-friendly Petco than in San Diego (3-5, 4.18 ERA).

Umpire Notes, Final Thoughts & A Free Pick
In addition to Atlanta's 4-game skid, Jim Reynolds brings his own streak into the matchup Saturday when he's expected to call balls and strikes. The 16-year veteran is working on a 5-game 'under' run behind the dish, bring Reynolds to 7-11 O/U on the campaign. His first plate assignment of the season was in San Diego, and it failed to reach the total.

A 5:40 PM local start in San Diego usually conjures up thoughts about the shadows creeping across the 3B line at some point during the game, but mostly cloudy skies could negate that effect. That would be a plus for the hitters in what is already a generally tough park to generate offense. For that reason alone, I'm going to get behind the two lineups for my free MLB pick on the high side of the total.
