Bet Game 2 of Mariners vs. Angels on the Low Side

The Angels are the first team to clinch a playoff spot after winning the opener of their MLB odds set in Seattle.  Will the Mariners end a 3-game skid in Tuesday's tilt?

Mike Scioscia can finally breath at least a small sigh of relief. After being left out of October baseball for four years, the Los Angeles Angels became the first team in the 2014 MLB betting campaign to sew up a postseason spot and can now turn their attention to securing home-field advantage throughout the playoffs.

Los Angeles' clinching win Monday night came at the expense of the Seattle Mariners, and the M's are growing desperate to stop a 3-game losing streak to keep their postseason hopes alive when the division rivals continue their series tonight (10:05 PM ET). The MLB odds don't like their chances with the Angels installed as -125 favorites behind starting hurler Cory Rasmus, 8.5 the unanimous total across the board.

Halos Clinch Playoffs With Dominant Monday Performance
Albert Pujols delivered the big blow for Los Angeles in Monday's triumph, a bases-drunk double in the third to give Matt Shoemaker all the offense he needed in the 8-1 decision. It was the Angels' 8th-straight win with Shoemaker on the mound, and now they'll hold their breath to see if the soreness in his left ribcage is anything to worry about.

The teams finish up the regular season against each other with a 3-game series in Seattle. Current rotation plans call for Felix Hernandez to be on the mound for the Mariners on the final day of the campaign, a start that could come with the playoffs on the line.

Halos Bullpen On Standby Tuesday Night
Should Seattle fall short of the playoffs, don't blame Elias. The Cuban's been solid in the Mariners rotation since the all-star break, posting a 2.45 ERA in the nine assignments and not allowing more than two earned runs in any of the starts.  Seattle hitters have only given him two runs or less support in six of the games, a big reason why the M's have won only three of the nine contests.

The Mariners have also lost both of his tries against the Angels this year, one in which he got knocked around a bit (6.1 IP, 5 ER) and the other one of four shutouts Seattle has suffered in his 28 starts. Tuesday will be the first time in his career Elias has toiled on the Anaheim bump.

Rasmus may be listed as the starter in this one, but he's really just the first of several arms Mike Scioscia will summon from his bullpen. The Georgia native has yet to throw more than 49 pitches in his three previous starts, and it's doubtful he'll deliver more than 55 on Tuesday.  Rasmus' lifetime experience against the Mariners consists of four relief outings, and he has allowed just one long ball in 25 innings at home in 2014.

Umpire Notes, Final Thoughts & A Free Pick
Just as starting rotations can get messy this time of season, so can the umpire rotations. Assuming Jerry Meals' crew stays the course for Game 2, Jordan Baker should be calling call balls and strikes. Now in his third big league season, the huge hulk of an umpire is a level 12-12-1 (O/U/P) on the totals after his last two contests skipped past the numbers. This his Baker's first career plate assignment at the Big A, and home chalk is running 12-7 in 2014 when he's behind the mask.

It's going to be a hot one Tuesday in Anaheim, the thermometer possibly reaching triple digits. The forecast calls for a first-pitch temp of 92º with a light westerly breeze heading out to center.

Los Angeles' lineup sent Monday's game past a 7.5 run total on its own to leave totals 5-2 O/U in the seven games played between the clubs in Anaheim, and the warm temps could be a boon for offense from both lineups tonight. I'm going the other direction with my free MLB pick, however, and playing Game 2 on the low side of the scoreboard barrier.

My Free MLB Pick: Mariners-Angels Under 8.5 (-110) at Bookmaker
