Detroit Tigers vs Boston Red Sox
Drew Pomeranz was picked up by the Boston Red Sox in a trade with the San Diego Padres and many fans in Red Sox nation were giddy for his arrival but I was never that supportive of the trade as I felt there would be plenty of concerns for Pomeranz in his new home. Yes, he pitched terrific for the San Diego Padres and is having his best season of his career but he is a fly ball pitcher that has benefitted from the cozy confines of Petco Park where fly balls tend to die in front of the warning track in the outfield.

Those same fly balls at Petco though turn into extra base hits and home runs here at Fenway Park and we saw major red flags from Pomeranz in his debut with the Red Sox last week against the San Francisco Giants here at Fenway Park that his pitching style may not be a good fit for this ballpark. Pomeranz allowed 5 runs on 8 hits including a pair of homers in just 3 innings of work but thankfully Boston bailed him out with plenty of run support in an 11-7 win. I’m not sure he will pitch well in this game either against a power laden Detroit lineup.

On the flip side, Justin Verlander continues his strong recent run for the Tigers allowing just 7 runs in his last 27.2 innings pitched over his last four starts. He has 9 walks and 32 strikeouts during that span and his track record against Boston has been solid allowing 4 runs in his last 22 innings pitched against the Red Sox in a three start stretch.

I think Detroit is a live underdog by MLB Odds, making them worthy of an MLB pick at this solid plus price.
