Sports handicapper Ian Cameron provides an MLB Early Lines Report for the baseball card taking place on Thursday, August 25.

Detroit Tigers vs Minnesota Twins
I am going to back Detroit once again on Thursday afternoon as they face the Minnesota Twins. Daniel Norris has pitched better of late for the Tigers as the lefty has allowed just 5 earned runs in 15.1 innings of work in 3 starts since returning from the DL against Seattle, Kansas City and Boston. Norris won his only previous start against Minnesota last season and I expect him to give Detroit a chance at another victory here in this game. On the flip side, it’s not difficult to make a case to bet against Jose Berrios as the Twins rookie starter is back on the mound here and it has been a very difficult campaign for him.

He has surrendered 14 runs on 19 hits in his last 11 innings of work while walking almost as many batters as he’s notched strikeouts in those last three starts. Minnesota was 0-3 in those games and it’s worth noting that Berrios got absolutely shellacked by Detroit when he faced them earlier this season back in April as the Tigers lineup hammered him for 7 runs and he didn’t make it past the first inning. Minnesota has lost five straight games as they seem to be running out of gas down the stretch of a massively disappointing season and this is a cheap near even money price to back the better team with a lot more to play for.

Cleveland Indians vs Texas Rangers
This is a reasonable enough price to support Texas and their veteran lefty Cole Hamels who continues to be an example of consistency for this Rangers rotation. Hamels has allowed 3 runs or less in seven straight starts and the Rangers are a sparkling 18-7 this season when he takes the mound including an 8-3 record in 11 home starts made by Cole Hamels this season. Hamels allowed 3 runs in a strong 7 inning performance against Cleveland earlier this season and I expect him to pitch well against an Indians lineup that has only scored 5 runs in their last 3 games combined.

On the other side, Josh Tomlin seems to be running out of gas for Cleveland. He got out of the gate strong this season in April and May but as the innings pile up, the fatigue is rising and his effectiveness has declined in recent starts. Tomlin has yielded 16 runs on 24 hits including a whopping 6 home runs in his last 16 innings of work over his last three starts and Cleveland has lost 4 straight Tomlin starts. Tomlin got crushed by Texas when he faced them back in May surrendering 8 runs in just 3.2 innings. The price is a moderate one but still cheap enough to get behind Texas and their best pitcher at home where the Rangers have a terrific record of 39-20 this season.
