It has been a rough year for Madison Bumgarner and the Giants, but they are favored on the MLB odds tonight when the Arizona Diamondbacks come to San Francisco.

MLB Season Record: 54-58-3 (-2.52)

They might own the third-best record in the National League, but all that’s good for is a distant 2nd place in the West Division for Arizona. The Diamondbacks will try and at least strengthen their hold on the top Wild Card spot in the Senior Circuit when they visit the San Francisco Giants for the weekend.

A late change to a rotation has kept SBR’s top sportsbooks from hanging an early money line on the 10:15 PM (ET). Arizona is bringing up Anthony Banda (0-1, 6.35) from the minors to fill in for at least one turn in the order, and he’ll face Giants ace Madison Bumgarner (1-4, 2.92).

If Not For Tough Luck, Bumgarner Would Have No Luck

With Robbie Ray on the concussion list, the D-Backs recalled Banda for this start, his second big-league appearance. The first came about two weeks ago, and Banda was greeted by a Bryce Harper homer in the first inning on his way to a 4-3 defeat. A 10th-round pick by Milwaukee in 2012 out of San Jacinto College in Houston, he’ll turn 24 next week and features a big curve plus a low-90s fastball in his arsenal.

Bumgarner’s bad luck continued this past Sunday when he tossed seven shutout innings in LA only to get no support in a 3-2 loss to the Dodgers. San Francisco is now 1-7 in his eight assignments and down 9.5 units on the MLB odds, despite the lefty only allowing more than three runs in one of his starts. The season actually got underway with a sign of things to come when he faced the Diamondbacks in Phoenix on Opening Day, Bumgarner leaving after seven with a 4-3 lead before his bullpen sputtered and coughed its way to a 6-5 setback.

Rivalry Trends, Mother Nature & A Free Pick

The Giants have generally taken care of business in this division rivalry, winning at more than a 57% clip overall. But they have actually won more frequently in Phoenix than San Francisco. That trend has reversed itself somewhat in 2017 with the Diamondbacks taking 3 of 4 at home to open the season and the Giants going 2-1 a week later at AT&T Park. All four games at Chase Field went past the totals while all three in San Francisco stayed ‘under.’

Fog and showers fill the San Francisco area in the morning hours, but it should be gone by early evening to leave behind cloudy skies, temps in the mid-to-upper 60s and a 12-15 mph west wind (out to center). Considering how things have gone for Bumgarner specifically, and the Giants in general, I think a free baseball pick on the Snakes is warranted.
