Today's MLB game is a very important one for the Dodgers, as well as bettors. They are just 1 game ahead of the Giants for the NL West; with a win today against the Padres they'll remain on top.

First pitch is set for 4:10 p.m. ET today at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles, California. This game can be seen on MLB TV.

One option for today's MLB picks is from 5 Dimes Sportsbook: Los Angeles is a moderate -144 betting favorite against the worst offensive team in the majors and the total for the game is 6.5 runs.

Where Will The Offense Come From?
They’re coming off of a 1-0 loss to Los Angeles and from a Padres standpoint, you have to be thinking is this team capable of scratching out a few runs to give themselves a chance against Dodgers starter Hyun-Jin Ryu?

The only thing in the Padres favor is that after a fantastic season, Ryu got blasted in his last start against the Detroit Tigers in which he allowed 7 runs on 10 hits in just 2 1/3 innings pitched. In this one start alone, Ryu’s earned run average went from 3.08 to 3.65. Ryu gets the perfect team to face this afternoon to regain his confidence as the San Diego Padres offense is one of the worst offenses in Major League Baseball over the last few decades.

Major Leaguers or Minor Leaguers?
Their uniforms say that each and every member of the Padres squad is a major league caliber player, but their production says otherwise, and those backing them with sports picks will likely agree.

The Padres rank 30th in the majors in runs scored, 30th in batting average, and 30th in on-base percentage. This is a team with a .274 on-base percentage. That’s as bad as it can possibly get as there are major league teams with a better batting average than the Padres on-base percentage.

Seth Smith
Smith is the offensive leader of the Padres. He got the day off  yesterday and was successful in his only plate appearance while pinch-hitting. Smith leads the Padres in every offensive category, batting .284 with a .388 on-base percentage, 10 HR and 27 RBI. Smith is also hitting .385 in the month of July with 2 HR and 3 RBI and has killed the Dodgers in the past. Against L.A., Smith is 8 for 17 with 4 HR and 4 RBI.

Look for Ryu to pitch cautiously when dealing with Smith. Even though Chase Headley has also been hot as of late (.354 in the month of July), Headley is not nearly the same player that he once was and the Padres have absolutely nothing to offer offensively, especially against a quality pitcher such as Ryu.

The Dodgers Nucleus
L.A.’s entire game is based off of good pitching, Dee Gordon making things happen on the basepath and setting up the bigger sticks such as Hanley Ramirez (11 HR, 48 RBI, .275, 12 SB), Yasiel Puig (12 HR, 51 RBI, .307), Matt Kemp (8 HR, 35 RBI, .270), and Adrian Gonzalez (14 HR, 60 RBI, .253).Players have gotten injured and went into slump at times, but thus far this equation has worked well. Also, it doesn’t hurt to have Clayton Kershaw on your team.

As of now, Matt Kemp is coming on strong after all of the injuries that he’s had to endure and Yasiel Puig has cooled off. Puig has the potential to be one of the top 3 players in baseball. Time will tell, but as for now, L.A. has a fine balance of offense and pitching.

Analyzing the MLB odds from a psychological standpoint proves that the Dodgers need this win, wanting to stay in the lead in the division going into the break. If Ryu can shake off a really rotten performance in his last outing, the Dodgers should beat up on the league’s worst offensive team in the Pads.
