Following a rough month of May, Masahiro Tanaka looks to find consistency when he leads the Yankees as favorites on the MLB odds in Tuesday’s series opener vs. the Red Sox.

MLB Season Record: 26-35 (-9.86)

Playing .500 ball for more than two weeks now, the New York Yankees have watched their lead in the AL East shrink to two games. It could be down to one Tuesday night if they can’t top the Boston Red Sox in the series opener at Yankee Stadium.

MLB Network will begin its coverage of the clash at 7 PM (ET), Masahiro Tanaka slated to deliver the first pitch five minutes into the hour. After officially opening New York -123, BetOnline has the Yankees -110 with a 9-run total as Boston looks for its third consecutive victory behind Drew Pomeranz.

Inconsistent Tanaka Glad To See May End

Boston lost 3 straight of his starts in mid-May, but Pomeranz closed the month with a couple of wins with solid efforts vs. Texas and at the White Sox. The Ole Miss alum worked a combined 13 innings in those victories with 18 strikeouts against a single walk. Pomeranz faced the Yankees three times last season, once in a San Diego uniform and twice for the Red Sox, and the result was two wins for his side and a 3.38 ERA. He’s appeared twice in this park, one of those from the ‘pen, and surrendered one earned run in nine frames.

Tanaka looks to put a disastrous May behind him, the fourth-year pitcher having just two quality starts in six tries during the month with an ugly 8.42 ERA and 11 home runs served up. He was rock-solid against the Red Sox at Fenway about six weeks ago, however, going the distance for his second career shutout while allowing only three hits without a free pass. Tanaka has fared pretty well in general against would-be Boston hitters, holding Mookie Betts, Xander Bogaerts and Jackie Bradley Jr. to a combined 12-for-71 (.169).

Rivalry Info, Mother Nature & A Free Pick

The series opener is game No. 2,159 between the old foes, and just the third clash this year. The clubs met in Boston near the end of April, the Yankees taking two after the series opener was rained out. New York’s newest park finds the Yanks up 38-37 since it opened in ’09, the Pinstripes coincidentally owning the same 38-37 record at Fenway in that same span. The Yanks have won the last five overall meetings and the last four on this field. MLB odds ran 2-7 O/U on the totals in the Bronx a year ago.

Rain chances diminish throughout the afternoon to 15% at game time, leaving rather humid air in the upper 50s and a 10-12 mph NE wind (in from left). By virtue of a coin flip, I will play the underdog for my free baseball pick.
