Mark Lathrop is coming off of a winning day after last night's outcome. This time he adds two totals to the week and another underdog where he believes the wrong team is favored. Be sure to follow his MLB Picks of the Day.

Both Minnesota and Detroit were projected to have offenses in the bottom half of the league this year by WAR standards. In this game, Minnesota tries to get that offense finally going on the road.

This early AL Central matchup features the Twins with their surprising early start in Detroit to face the Tigers. Minnesota’s starting pitching was fantastic the first time through the rotation, but now that the team is on the road the Twins offense has started to fail them. Through Tuesday the Twins offense had batted just .211 on the road with a terrible .261 on-base percentage. Minnesota only scored 3 runs in their Wednesday night matchup with Detroit, a 5-3 loss.

Attempting to avoid the sweep for the Twins is Phil Hughes, who pitched 6 innings of one run ball on the road against the White Sox last week. Hughes has lost 3 straight starts against the Tigers, but he really hasn’t pitched that badly. Opposing Hughes is Jordan Zimmerman, who has a career ERA of 3.43 and WHIP of 1.00 against Minnesota with most of his game featuring high strikeout totals. With Minnesota on a 5-0 Under run in their last five games and Detroit 4-1 likewise, I like those trends to continue here with capable starters on the mound. I’m taking Under 8.5 runs in this game as one of my Thursday's MLB Picks.

Oakland Athletics vs. Kansas City Royals

It appears the better pitcher is the listed underdog here, as Oakland continues a series on the road against the Kansas City Royals. I like both the side and the total as a result of the matchup.

This game features two starters that have missed considerable time over the last few years due to injury; however, just one has any appreciable upside left in his career. Journeyman Jason Vargas starts for Kansas City, and his extreme fly ball results have served him well since 2005. He missed most of 2015 and 2016 due to injury, and is now back in the rotation for the Royals. He won his first game out this year by giving up only one run over 6 innings on the road against Houston.

Jesse Hahn gets the start for Oakland and has been a fantastic pitcher… when healthy. That has been a problem for Hahn, but since it is early in the season I don’t see a reason why we can doubt him here. Hahn has one of the nastiest fastballs and two-seam fastballs in the major leagues in regards to movement, so when he is on, he can be deadly.

So we have two serviceable pitchers here, leading to my Under call of 8.5. But Hahn’s upside to pitch a gem and Kansas City’s bullpen ERA of 7.77 through Tuesday gives Oakland the upper hand. I see great value in taking Oakland at plus MLB odds +119 as another pick.
