The Mariners find themselves in playoff position for the first time all year, and open up a home series with their ace on the mound. Our MLB handicapper believes the train keeps rolling on Edgar Martinez’s weekend in Seattle.

Los Angeles Angels vs Seattle Mariners

I will be attending the Mariners game on Friday night, which is a bummer since I will miss James Paxton by one day. No matter, what I will get to see is runs and dingers because Paxton wouldn’t have allowed them. The big lefty has a 10.48 K/9 rate, a 2.15 ERA at home, and allows just a .306 SLG percentage in Safeco Field. He’s already faced the Angels twice this year and has allowed just 2 earned runs over 11.2 innings pitched. That’s good folks.

The Mariners will go up against Tyler Skaggs, who will be pitching in his second start since coming off of the DL. Skaggs has given up a .276 batting average against righties this year, which has become a trigger for me lately to tail the Mariners. When the right handers for the Mariners have a good night the entire lineup usually follows. But face it, Skaggs will have to be absolutely perfect on this night to compete with Paxton. I’ll take the ace and the run line to bring the chalk in at +100 at 5Dimes as one of my Thursday MLB selections.

After getting a push last night in Arizona on the first 5 innings our MLB handicapper is back for more at Chase Field. He finds even greater value in the unknown as Anthony Banda takes his turn against the Dodgers.

Los Angeles Dodgers vs Arizona  Diamondbacks

What’s not to like about a lefty who sits in the mid-90’s and has a plus curveball and changeup to mix in. Such is the case with hot prospect, Anthony Banda, who will be seeing the Dodgers for the first time in his career. He’s been admirable in his first two starts this season and has put up a 3.48 FIP and 12/4 K/BB rate. Banda has kept the ball in the yard his entire career through the minors, which is a characteristic I like in this matchup against the Dodgers. In his career in the big leagues he has just a 6.7% HR/FB rate, even if over very limited time.

Banda will go up against Yu Darvish, who will be making his second start in a Dodger uniform. I’m not a fan of Darvish and I can’t seem to put my finger on why just yet. His skill set is declining that is for sure, with his FIP increasing season over season since 2014. But in the end, I think this pick is about value, and Banda should be able to match him for the first 5 innings of this game. With the chalk where it is we should be able to back the Diamondbacks near even money at +.5 on the first 5 moneyline, which is what I will do as one of my Thursday MLB picks
