Our MLB handicapper leads into the All-Star Break with two picks with screaming value. Read on as he breaks down two games out West and makes his Sunday MLB Picks of the Day.

Royals vs Dodgers

Clayton Kershaw comes into this game against the Royals as a 3-bill favorite. Our MLB handicapper turns to the listed total to find value as the Royals have a decent starter on the mound.

Danny Duffy has been a solid starter for the Royals for the good part of 2 seasons now and carries a 3.55 FIP into this interleague matchup with the Dodgers. He’s been limiting home runs at one of the best rates in the league, with a 4.8% HR/FB rate. Actually, that is the best rate of limiting dingers in the MLB right now. Duffy has taken a step further in inducing weak contact over last year’s success, bringing his hard-hit rate from 36.6% to 27.6%. All those positive words aside, Duffy is outclassed by his opponent, Clayton Kershaw.

After Kershaw gave up 6 earned runs to the Mets on June 19th, he has yet to give up a run in 3 starts spanning 20 innings. He’s picked up a 31/5 K/BB rate in this time, and has one more start before the All-Star break. With an American League team coming in without the DH I like his chances at continuing success. However, with Duffy also getting a National League lineup for the first time he should be able to put in a quality start. I’ll grab the Under in this matchup at 7.5 runs as one of my Sunday MLB Picks of the Day.

White Sox vs Rockies

Our MLB handicapper likes the underdog in this matchup for a multitude of reasons. Read on as he breaks down this interleague game at Coors Field on Sunday.

2014 3rd overall draft pick, Carlos Rodon, starts this third game of his season for the White Sox and comes off of a great game in which he struck out 10 Athletics. That was an improvement over his first start of the year against New York in which he walked six batters and allowed 3 runs – zero earned. He’s got a wicked slider as a punch-out pitch, and has only allowed a .150 batting average allowed in his limited action in 2017.

Lefty Kyle Freeland of the Rockies will go up against a White Sox team that averages 5.4 runs per game and hits .288 off of left-handers. Freeland’s splits don’t show a lineup that would struggle much actually, as he allows a .296 BAA to lefties and a .272 BAA to righties. He strikes out only 12.9% of batters and walks 8.7%, leading to a very subpar K-BB% of 4.1%. He’s still won 8 decisions though in spite of himself. I like both the matchup for the White Sox lineup here against Freeland and Rodon’s ability gap to make them a dangerous underdog. I’ll take Chicago as a Moneyline underdog at 5Dimes as one of my Sunday MLB Picks of the Day.
