Arguably one of the more competitive interleague matchups will take place in Miami when the Rays visit the Marlins. Oddsmakers have come out making visiting Tampa Bay a small underdog so is there any value in backing them?

Tampa Bay Rays

Jake Odorizzi gets the start for Tampa Bay and comes in with a 4.15 ERA and 1.00 whip. He is just coming off the 10 days DL but I look for him to give Tampa Bay a legitimate shot at winning today. I think there is good value in grabbing him with some plus money. His career numbers are solid with a 3.76 ERA and 1.21 whip, and I believe he is one of the most underrated pitchers in the game today.

At the plate, the Rays have been surprisingly good hitting .248 as a team and averaging 4.40 runs per game ranking them 12th and 14th in the major leagues respectively. They also have been really solid at getting on base and being productive ranking 10th in hits per game and 11th in OPS. What they do struggle with though is strikeouts as they rank last in the major leagues in that category, but they should be okay today facing a pitcher with not a huge strikeout rate. There is no reason to think that they cannot manufacture enough runs to give Odorizzi he a chance for the win which makes this a good value play.

Miami Marlins

Wei-Yin Chen takes the mound for Miami and comes in with a 4.71 ERA and 1.24 whip. Like his counterpart his numbers so far this season aren’t as good as his career numbers with a 3.92 ERA and 1.26 whip. He has been hot and cold so far this season having a couple rough outings versus the New York Mets and Philadelphia Phillies while having two stellar starts against the Mariners and the aforementioned Mets.

I really like Chen and think he’s a solid major league pitcher but for me, there is good value in fading him in this spot in a game I think and go either way. At the plate, like Tampa Bay, Miami has been surprisingly good hitting .253 as a team and averaging 4.27 runs per game ranking them 10th and 18th in the major leagues respectively. However, they rank last in the league in walks and their OPS is not that great at .693 which ranks 24th in the league. All things considered Tampa Bay is arguably the more productive offensive team so again this just comes down the value.

Tampa Bay Rays vs Miami Marlins

Oddsmakers have come out making Tampa Bay a +115 underdog or better and for my MLB pick, I will take them in this position. This is an even pitching matchup, I say the value definitely lies on the Rays.
