The Los Angeles Angels have grown accustomed to winning games in the later innings, which provides the Detroit Tigers value before the bullpens get involved Thursday night on the MLB Network.

Road trippin’
Detroit third baseman Miguel Cabrera is hitting .429 since the All-Star break, which played a big part in the team opening this road trip by taking two of three games against the Arizona Diamondbacks, including an 11-5 victory as -142 favorites Wednesday.

The Tigers captured two of three contests against the Angels earlier this year at Comerica Park, but Cabrera tallied just a single hit in 11 at-bats—something to consider when looking over the pro baseball odds Thursday.

MLB handicappers will find that the franchise is 8-4 ATS as road underdogs of +100 to +125, with no clear edge in terms of the betting total (6-6 Over/Under).

Don’t call it a comeback
Los Angeles has split its first six games of its current homestand, as it comes off a 3-2 victory over the Baltimore Orioles as -163 favorites last night, while the UNDER has cashed in five contests in that span.

The Halos have registered a league-leading 31 comeback victories during the 2014 campaign, which will make them one of the more popular MLB picks for this series opener at Angel Stadium.

It’s important to point out that the club is a dominating 40-15 against Detroit at this venue since 2001.

Tigers starting pitcher Max Scherzer (11-3, 3.34 ERA) didn’t earn a decision in a 5-2 home defeat to the Cleveland Indians last time out, as he allowed two runs and six hits over 5.2 innings of work.

The right-hander is 4-2 with a 3.43 ERA in 10 road appearances—issuing 21 walks and striking out 77 batters in 65.2 combined frames.

In five lifetime starts versus the Angels, Scherzer has notched a 3-1 record and 2.16 ERA, but will be making just his second appearance at this ballpark.

Angels starting pitcher Garrett Richards (11-2, 2.47 ERA) has produced a 7-0 record and 1.25 ERA in his last nine outings, but he didn’t factor into the decision of a 3-2 setback at home to the Seattle Marlins in his last trip to the mound—giving up a single run and three hits over eight frames.

The right-hander is 5-1 with a 3.16 ERA in nine home starts, as he’s managed to serve up just one home run in 62.2 innings of work.

As a starter, Richards has posted a 2-0 record and tossed 14 scoreless innings in his career against the Tigers.

I’m going to recommend that readers back the Tigers in the first five innings as one of their MLB predictions, as Scherzer should be able to match Richards in the early going, while the Angels have made it a habit of falling behind early recently.

Detroit has also won four of Scherzer’s last five outings as a road underdog of +100 to +125.
