The MLB betting situation surrounding Monday’s game between the Cleveland Indians and the Chicago White Sox is a very simple one. You just have to figure out which scenario is more likely to happen.

The Cleveland Indians Can Win Because…
If you look at Corey Kluber’s most recent start, it is easy to think that he has figured out some things about how to carry himself on the mound in a season that brought so many expectations. Kluber was and still is the reigning Cy Young Award winner in the American League. He was supposed to lead the Indians to a big season. Cleveland was supposed to contend with Detroit and Kansas City in the American League Central Division. Pressure did accompany Kluber’s season, though, and after a few decent starts but a lack of team success – his bullpen played poorly in some of his early starts – Kluber seemed to lose focus. He struggled in his next several starts, and the Tribe lost in each and every game he pitched. As he took the mound on May 13 against the St. Louis Cardinals, everyone wondered if Kluber was ever going to regain his Cy Young form.

He clearly did.

Kluber pitched eight complete innings. He gave up only one hit. He didn’t allow any runs. He didn’t issue any walks. He struck out 18 Cardinal hitters. He was as dominant and as flawless as a Cy Young winner is supposed to be. If Kluber has figured things out, he should be able to dominate the White Sox and win this game for the Indians. It’s that simple. Anyone who bets on Cleveland in this game is betting on Kluber to come through.

The Chicago White Sox Can Win Because…
Kluber might need to show that he can put together consecutive good starts. Kluber was extraordinarily good in his last start, but in his previous four starts, he gave up at least five runs. Keep in mind that the Cardinals are an interleague team that is not used to facing American League pitching on a regular basis. Now that Kluber is facing an American League team and a division team once again, he could struggle. He did give up six runs on 13 hits in his previous 2015 outing against the White Sox, back on April 22. The White Sox got in some great swings and battered Kluber into submission. If Kluber doesn’t come up with good answers against these hitters on Monday, he’ll be toast.

The other reason the White Sox can win is that struggling staff ace Chris Sale got back on the beam in his most recent start. He gave up just two runs on three hits in eight innings against the Milwaukee Brewers on May 12. He issued only one walk and struck out 11. If he pitches like that against the Indians, he should win.

The Kluber-Sale matchup is volatile, but both pitchers struggled a lot before pitching a lot better in their most recent starts. The difference is that Kluber was more purely dominant than Sale was. Given his 18-strikeout effort, we’re willing to take a shot with him and the Indians for our MLB picks as a road dog on the MLB betting odds.
