One big inning propelled the Nationals to victory against the Dodgers on Monday, but LA is strongly favored on the MLB odds to bounce back tonight behind Zack Greinke.
The Los Angeles Dodgers never could solve the offerings of Gio Gonzalez on Monday. It took a while before the Washington Nationals finally figured out Brett Anderson, but when they did, the runs came in a big bunch for an 8-3 victory in the opener of this 3-game set.
If the total showing up on the baseball betting board for Tuesday's tilt is any indication, both lineups are expected to struggle in Game 2. Zack Greinke is set to get the contest underway with a first pitch at 10:10 PM (ET), his Dodgers favored around -165 on the moneyline. Rookie Joe Ross counters for the Nationals and we're seeing mostly 6½ run totals that are priced 'over' at shops like BetOnline where playing the high side of the tally will cost you 30¢.
Greinke Seeking 2nd Win Vs. Nats This Year
Ross managed to square his record at 3-3 with a solid performance at home last Thursday. The rookie went six innings, his sixth consecutive start last at least that long, allowing the Diamondbacks just one run on a Jarrod Saltalamacchia long ball while striking out seven against no walks. He's given up fewer hits than innings pitched in each assignment since his MLB debut in early June, but has begun to serve up home runs with four balls leaving the yard his last three outings after not allowing a homer in his first four starts. Ross is facing the Dodgers for the first time in his career.
Greinke is coming off his worst appearance of this season, but still managed to hang around long enough for his offense to bail him out and get the dubya. The major league leader with a 1.71 ERA suffered through a 5-run first inning at Philadelphia, three of the plate crossings courtesy of a Domonic Brown home run, before Greinke quieted the Phillies with only three hits the next five frames.
He outdueled Max Scherzer to beat the Nationals in Washington on July 19, tossing eight scoreless in Los Angeles' 5-0 victory. Greinke whiffed 11 in that outing and owns a 1.54 ERA this season in 12 starts at home where the Dodgers are 8-4 behind their righthander.
Umpire Notes, Mother Nature & A Free Pick
Two of the most inconsistent umpires in the biz will call balls and strikes the next two games, starting with CB Bucknor on Tuesday. How this guy made it to his 20th season at the big league level is beyond me, but he brings a 10-7-2 O/U/P record vs. the MLB odds into this matchup nonetheless. It's his second plate assignment of 2015 at Dodger Stadium, Bucknor calling an 'under' 6 contest about two months ago between the Cardinals and Dodgers.
It's going to be a little warmer and more humid in LA today than Monday, and I'm getting firmly behind Greinke to even this series with a run line play for my free MLB pick.
