Giants visit the Dodgers for the 1st of a 3-game, early week set. This is also the first of 9 series games remaining for these teams out of their remaining 38 games. The results of those contests will go a long way toward deciding the division champion join us for MLB picks.

San Francisco Giants vs L.A. Dodgers
The Dodgers currently lead the Giants by 1 game in the division race and have captured 7 of the last 8 meetings in this field between these two. Based on the current form of each of these teams, along with the recent starting pitching form, I am backing the Dodgers at an EVEN money price in a field, where their 38 home wins are 2nd only to the Cubs in the National League.

If it is an even-numbered year, there is a good chance the Giants will win the World Series, as they have in 2010, 2012 and 2014. It certainly looked that way at the All-Star Break, when the Giants were on a 40-15 run and held a commanding lead over the Dodgers. Since that time, however, San Fran has gone 11-23. Their vaunted starting pitching has left them down with just 10 quality starts in those 34 contests. They now enter this series following a pair of weekend defeats on their home field by counts of 2-0 and 9-5 to the struggling Mets. If the Giants are going to turn things around, this would be the spot. But, there is little indication that will happen!

While the Giants have been struggling post-break, the LA Dodgers have continued a surge that has started in late June. They are now one game clear of San Fran because of a recent 37-22 run. Remember, that this has been crafted, in spite of multiple injuries, including Kershaw, who is slowly working his way back into the rotation. The Dodgers did play in the eastern time zone yesterday, posting an 18-9 victory at Cincinnati in the early afternoon. This allows them plenty of time to recover for the evening start.

On the pitching front, this price is a PERCEPTION/REALITY number, based on the history of Bumgarner and the limited work of Maeda. The numbers for Bumgarner are solid for the year at 12-7 with a 2.25 ERA. But, he was shaky at best against the weak hitting Mets in his previous outing, allowing 4 runs in 5 IP. San Fran has lost Bumgarner’s last 4 starts against the Dodgers and has posted a 4.09 ERA against them in 2 meetings this season. His pitching opponent today is Maeda, who has a likewise record of 12-7 and a solid 3.29 ERA. But, his last 7 starts have been his best. In that timeframe, Maeda is 6-1 with a 0.88 WHIP and a 44/4 K/BB.

I invite you to put the MLB odds in your favor and join me in my MLB pick on the LA Dodgers tonight.
