Mariners at A's

Yovani Gollardo tries to keep the Mariners in the Wild Card hunt on Wednesday against the Athletics on the road. Indications are he can keep this game competitive and has a great chance at winning outright.

In Marc Lawrence’s talk at the International Football Betting Conference. he stated the simple fact that winning teams find a way to win and losing teams find a way to lose. Such should be the case here in Oakland, as Jharel Cotton and the 50-62 Oakland Athletics find themselves as slim home favorites over the 57-56 Seattle Mariners (as of Tuesday afternoon). Cotton has a terrible walk rate at 4.01 BB/9 and an FIP of 5.17 over the full season. He also has a dinger problem at home and gives up a .268 batting average against righties – not a good recipe when facing the Seattle lineup.

Yovani Gallardo starts for the shorthanded Mariners pitching staff and he has lucked into some good results of late. He has just a .222 BAA in the second half of the season, yet his FIP since the All-Star Break is a terrible 7.10. I’ll consider him about even with Cotton for the sake of argument, but with the addition of Yonder Alonso from the A’s this week the Mariners' lineup just got better. Alonso and his 22 home runs will slot in a platoon with Danny Valencia at 1st base – an almost perfect fit. I’ll take the Mariners to outslug the Athletics in this game.

Dodgers at Diamondbacks

The Dodgers have been red-hot lately but also heavy favorites in each and every game. They face the ace of the Diamondbacks in the desert in Zack Greinke on Wednesday night.

Dodgers lefty Alex Wood still showed a decline in velocity in his last start, although he was able to work around 7 hits and win the game at Atlanta. He only struck out 2 and walked 2, so not exactly a dominating performance as the Dodgers' offense bailed eventually bailed him out. The cracks have finally started to show in the armor with Wood, as he has a 4.56 ERA and .287 BAA since the All-Star Break. He will give up some runs to this Arizona offense.

Wood will face Greinke of the Diamondbacks, who is coming off of a home run derby of a game at Wrigley Field in which the Cubs hit 2 home runs and the Diamondbacks hit 5. I’m throwing that game out when handicapping Greinke in this spot, where he will get to pitch against the Dodgers for the first time at home this year. He’s better at home than on the road, where he has put up a 3.04 FIP, 95/13 K/BB rate, .189 BAA and .353 SLG. These are some strong numbers for Greinke to find himself an underdog, so I will gladly take him at plus odds on the moneyline as one of my Wednesday MLB Picks of the Day.
