The Los Angeles Dodgers begin a 7-game road trip on Tuesday in Phoenix, and we have a free baseball pick for their series opener against the Arizona Diamondbacks.

MLB Season Record: 66-70-4 (-1.13)

Hard to believe that a team with a 19-game lead in its division could have better days ahead, but that’s the case for the Los Angeles Dodgers as they close out August with a series against the Arizona Diamondbacks. Tuesday’s tilt gets underway at 9:40 PM (ET) with LA sending veteran Rich Hill (9-5, 3.32) to the mound against Arizona’s Zack Godley (5-7, 3.15). Bookmaker is charging -124 for a play on the Dodgers with 9 for the total.

What has things looking up for Los Angeles is the impending return from the DL for several. Two members of the rotation, Clayton Kershaw and Alex Wood, are set to pitch this weekend when the Dodgers are in San Diego with four games to play in three days. Rookie star Cody Bellinger is also due back this week, possibly as early as Wednesday.

Godley Out To Stop 3-Game Skid

In case you missed it, Hill is coming off the toughest loss suffered by any pitcher in 2017, the southpaw losing a perfect game in the ninth last Wednesday in Pittsburgh then the no-hitter and the game in the 10th on a walk-off homer. It was the oft-injured hurler’s first complete game since a 2-hit shutout for Boston late in 2015, and it was a much shorter appearance than when he faced the Diamondbacks in LA earlier this season after being forced from the game due to a blister in the third inning.

Godley has gone down in defeat his last three times out, never getting through the sixth in any of those contests while pitching to a 4.50 ERA in 16 combined innings. Just before that string started, the former Tennessee star had helped the Snakes to a win over the Dodgers, leaving Arizona 1-1 against LA this season while Godley fashioned a 2.92 ERA in a little more than 12 innings. He has done reasonably well against this lineup in his short career, Justin Turner taking Godley deep twice for the only long balls off the right-hander.

Rivalry Trends, Final Thoughts & A Free Pick

The Dodgers hold an 8-5 advantage in the rivalry for 2017, winning both sets at Chase two games to one and the last three series on this diamond dating to the end of the 2016 campaign. In the six games played in Phoenix this season, the MLB odds have included totals in the 9-9½ range and ended a level 3-3 O/U. Arizona is happy to not see Wood in this series, the LA lefty due to come off the DL this weekend and 3-0 vs. the Diamondbacks this year.

With temps climbing towards 110° all week, expect the lid to be shut at Chase Field for the entire series. Put me down for a free baseball pick on the ‘under’ tonight in Phoenix.
