A possible playoff preview piques our interests Monday in the Bronx where the Yankees and Indians begin a 3-game series with a matchup that’s a pick‘em on the MLB odds.

MLB Season Record: 65-70-4 (-2.18)

A huge homestand against three playoff contenders started well for the New York Yankees, who took two of three from the Mariners over the weekend. Now they turn their attention to the Cleveland Indians, who arrive in the Bronx on a 4-game win streak that has boosted their lead to 6½ games in the AL Central race.

ESPN will carry the opener of the 3-game set beginning at 7 PM (ET) with the first pitch five minutes after the top of the hour. Luis Severino (11-5, 3.10) will deliver that pitch in a game that is very tight on the betting board as Bookmaker offers up the home side on a -106 money line. Corey Kluber (12-4, 2.65) opposes Severino with 7 runs for the total, that number down a half since the lines first went out.

Each Starter Looking For 2nd Wins In Rivalry This Season

Both of tonight’s starting pitchers grabbed dubyas when these clubs met in Cleveland a little more than three weeks ago. Kluber was a -155 favorite on the MLB odds in the series opener that was also Sonny Gray’s debut, the Indians’ ace going the distance and allowing just one run in a 5-1 final. Severino pitched the finale for New York, working into the seventh of an 8-1 decision with Cleveland’s only run coming on a Michael Brantley homer.

Kluber continued with three more wins after beating the Yanks, part of a 6-game string of victories for the Indians with their ace on the mound. That streak was stopped last Wednesday against the Red Sox, Boston claiming a 6-1 win with Kluber allowing two of those runs in his 7.2 innings of work at Progressive Field. After beating the Indians, Severino was knocked around by the Red Sox, who plated 10 (8 earned) before chasing the Dominican in the fifth. He bounced back with victories his next two assignments, a combined 13 innings on the road against the Tigers and Mets with just one earned run charged to his ledger.

Rivalry Trends, Mother Nature & A Free Pick

That 4-game series in Cleveland ended with a split to leave these rivals a level 9-9 against one another since the start of the 2015 campaign. Totals ran 1-2-1 O/U/P at Progressive Field for the first series, and both teams sport ‘under’ leans for August -- with New York standing 11-13-1 and Cleveland 8-14-3 in the totals column. Six of the last 10 games played in the Bronx failed to reach the totals.

Partly cloudy, the thermometer dropping into the upper 60s as the game progresses and a 10-12 mph ESE wind (in from right) is the Bronx forecast this evening. Put me down for a free baseball pick on the ‘over.’
