The Cubs are scrapping and clawing their way on top of the NL Central, while the Phillies are bringing up the rear of the NL East, and we have a free MLB pick for their series opener Friday in Philadelphia.

MLB Season Record: 65-68-3 (-0.18)

With a 4-game lead in the race for the worst record of 2017, the Philadelphia Phillies could see that number grow in their quest for the top draft pick next June after a weekend visit from the Chicago Cubs. The old foes begin their weekend set Friday night (7:05 ET), and BetOnline likes the Cubs on a -180 money line with Jose Quintana (8-10, 4.27) on the hill. Jerad Eickhoff (3-7, 4.46) gets the call for the Phils with 9 for the total.

Chicago just saw its 5-game win streak snapped Thursday in Cincinnati on the first leg of a road trip. The Cubs now have a 3-game lead over Milwaukee in the NL Central chase, those teams still having seven games against each other. Philadelphia is more than 30 games out in the NL East and auditioning some of its youngsters as another sad campaign winds down.

Phils Level In Eickhoff’s 10 Home Starts

Quintana has won his last two starts, both of those games at Wrigley and both as pronounced chalk on the MLB odds. The most recent was last Saturday against the Blue Jays, the Colombian going six and surrendering just two runs on four hits while whiffing eight. He’s only had one real stinker since joining Chicago last month, that coming against a strong D-Backs lineup. Quintana faced the Phillies once while with the ChiSox, that outing coming four years ago in Philadelphia where he was charged with three runs in six frames.

Eickhoff is making his first home start since late July, the Phillies splitting his four road assignments so far in August. That is significant with the right-hander’s ERA at Citizens Bank Park (3.83) more than a run lower than on the road (4.93), and the Phils 5-5 when he chucks in front of the home fans compared to 2-10 away from home. Eickhoff fell to the Cubs in Chicago back in May, working into the sixth and allowing four runs.

Rivalry Trends, Mother Nature & A Free Pick

After the Phillies won or tied each season series from 2011-15, the Cubs began to turn that around last year by winning five of six encounters, and they’re up 3-1 in 2017 following a long set at Wrigley in early May. All four of the May matchups went ‘over’ totals that ranged from as low as 6½ to as high as 10½, and five of the last seven on this diamond also eclipsed the marks.

Clear skies, the thermometer in the mid-70s and a light NW breeze (in from left-center) is tonight’s forecast in the City of Brotherly Love. Let’s follow the series trend with a free baseball pick on the ‘over.’
