Are we getting a World Series preview when the Astros host the Nationals this week in Houston? Join us for a free baseball pick in Tuesday’s series opener.

MLB Season Record: 64-65-3 (+1.24)

Though they’re each missing a key member of their lineup, this week’s series in Houston between the Astros and Washington Nationals could provide a glimpse into a potential World Series showdown. The 3-game set gets underway Tuesday evening (8:10 ET) with a mound clash between Tanner Roark (9-8, 4.70) and Charlie Morton (10-5, 3.69), Bookmaker sending Houston out as -170 chalk with a 9 run total that leans to the ‘over.’

Washington arrives in Bayou City after taking 3 of 4 in San Diego, and the Nationals are still at least three weeks away from getting Bryce Harper (knee) back. Pitching propelled Houston to a series win over the A’s this past weekend, and the Astros are hopeful to have Carlos Correa (wrist) back in the mix 10 days or so from now.

Houston 8-4 In Morton’s Home Starts

A couple of long balls were Roark’s undoing last week at home against the Angels, a tough-luck 3-2 loss as -130 chalk on the MLB odds. He has been a far better pitcher on the road than at home, the former Fighting Illini pitching to a 4.19 ERA outside of DC with the Nationals winning seven of those 11 assignments. Roark beat the Astros three years ago in the nation’s capital, Jose Altuve and George Springer going a combined 4-for-5 against him.

Though he was a little on the wild side with four walks, Morton limited the Diamondbacks to just a run on three hits while striking out nine last Wednesday in Houston to claim his 10th victory.  It was the third dubya in as many tries for the veteran right-hander against NL clubs, and the Astros are 8-4 in his 12 home starts with Morton sporting a 3.45 ERA in Houston.  The Nats have given him some trouble over his career, tonight marking his ninth career start against them with a 2-4 record and a 6.26 ERA (37.1 IP).

Rivalry Trends, Final Thoughts & A Free Pick

Technically speaking, this is one of the least-played matchups over the course of the 21+ year history of interleague contests, the Nationals and Astros meeting for just four games as NL and AL opponents. Of course, they met another 444 times when both resided in the Senior Circuit, beginning in 1969 when Washington was playing ball north of the border in Montreal. The Nats won all four tilts three years ago in the only previous interleague battles, the two games in Houston falling short of the totals whole both games in DC went ‘over.’

The lid will be on Minute Maid for this one, and with Harper missing plus school cranking up this week in Houston, I expect a sparse crowd. That could help negate some of the home-field advantage, which has me inclined to back Washington with my free baseball pick.
