Houston needed the full seven games to dispatch the Los Angeles Dodgers in last year’s World Series. Now it appears the Astros will battle the other team from the LA area all season for supremacy in the AL West, making this week’s quick 3-game road trip to Anaheim against the Angels all the more crucial.

The Astros just finished a short 3-game homestand by taking two of three from the Rangers and enter the seventh week of the campaign with the largest run differential in the majors (+91). The Angels are a game back in the division after splitting a 4-game set against the Twins to begin this 11-game homestand that finds the Tampa Bay Rays following Houston into Anaheim. Tonight’s 10:07 (ET) first pitch has Andrew Heaney (1-2, 4.78) on the bump for the Halos against Lance McCullers Jr. (5-1, 3.72), Bovada listing the Astros at -135 with an 8-run total that shows signs of slipping down to 7½.

‘Stros Averaging 6+ RPG In McCullers’ Starts

McCullers didn’t have his best stuff in Oakland last week, but still managed to come away with his fifth dubya. He walked four while striking out only three, allowing two runs over five innings. Houston is 4-1 in McCullers’ five road assignments thanks to plating more than six runs a game in those. The right-hander recorded a fine 1.06 ERA over three starts against the Angels last season, but the Astros only managed enough offense to win one of those matchups.

Heaney took a tough loss this past Tuesday in Colorado, working six and allowing just two runs with the Angels eventually falling 4-2 as small underdogs on the baseball odds. The clash never even sniffed a 10½-run total, the third ‘under’ among his five starts. The lefty has been solid against the Astros in two career starts, allowing just a run in 11 innings over those outings without giving up a homer.

Astros Won All 3 Series In Anaheim Last Season

The Angels won 2 of 3 in Houston about three weeks ago, the victories coming in games Charlie Morton and Gerrit Cole started for the Astros. Two of the contests failed to reach 8½-run totals, the lone ‘over’ on an 8-run line. The Astros have won the last three season series, and took all three sets in Anaheim last season two games to one. Totals split in the nine contests, 4-4 O/U with a push.

Clear skies and temps in the low-to-mid 60s are on tap for Monday’s matchup, a light WSW breeze (out to right-center) also in the forecast. The numbers add up to a free MLB pick on the road chalk to get this series underway.
