Thanks to Jake Arrieta turning his slow start around, the Cubs are on top of the NL Central and big favorites on the MLB odds today when they start a long set in Pittsburgh.

They may not be have been mathematically eliminated from the postseason yet, but it’s only a matter of time now for the Pittsburgh Pirates. Still, they’d love to play the role of spoiler for other teams and at least throw a scare into the Chicago Cubs when the old foes begin a 4-game set in Pittsburgh in their last get-together this season.

They’ll begin the final meeting with a Labor Day matinee, ESPN beginning its coverage at 4 PM (ET). Chicago sends Jake Arrieta (14-8, 3.36) to the bump with the defending World Series champs looking to increase their 3½-game lead in the NL Central. Seven games under .500 and 7½ behind in the chase for an NL wild card, Pittsburgh trots Chad Kuhl (6-10, 4.54) out desperate to try to make up ground and climb over four teams ahead of them for a shot at the postseason. BetOnline is pricing the Cubs -175 with an 8½ run total.

Can Kuhl Snap 5-Game Losing Streak Vs. Cubs?
Today’s initial mound duel is a rematch from six days ago in Chicago where Arrieta and the Cubs cashed as -235 chalk on the MLB odds. Arrieta blanked the Bucs over six innings on two hits before handing things off to his bullpen in the 4-1 Chicago decision, the second dubya in a 6-game win streak that was snapped Sunday in a 5-1 setback at home to the Braves. Kuhl strung together five innings of shutout baseball in the matchup before the Cubs plated three to chase him in the sixth.

Pittsburgh had beaten Chicago all three times Arrieta had taken the hill against them before the August 29 affair. The TCU alum stands 3-3 with a 3.42 ERA in seven assignments at PNC Park since joining the Cubs, Josh Bell representing his toughest out in the Pirates lineup. It was the third time in as many tries this season that Chicago beat Kuhl, and they pounded on him in Pittsburgh back in April when he failed to get out of the second before surrendering nine runs.

Rivalry Trends, Mother Nature & A Free Pick
The Cubs have made themselves right at home in Pittsburgh since PNC Park opened in ’01, going 78-63 (.553) and winning four of the six games played here this year. The Pirates have kept the season series close by taking 5-of-9 at Wrigley this season. ‘Over’ bettors cleaned up in Pittsburgh a year ago when results were 9-1 O/U, but that has leveled out in 2017 with totals halved in the six previous games on this diamond.

It should be a pleasant afternoon around Three Rivers, 80° at first pitch with a few clouds and a 10-12 mph SW wind (right to left). Let’s break up the chalk with a free baseball pick on Chicago and the run line.

My Free MLB Pick: Cubs -1½ (-105) at 5Dimes

[/]{"component":"oddswidget", "eventId":3140197, "sportsbooksIds":[19,169,180,300,139], "LineTypeId":1, "PeriodTypeId":1 }[/]

Season: 69-73-4 (-0.12)
