A post-All Star break surge has slowed for the Chicago Cubs as they head out on a 6-game road trip, and we have a free baseball pick for their Monday matchup in San Francisco.

It has been more than a month since the San Francisco Giants strung together at least three wins in a row. They’ll try to end that dry spell this evening, though the odds are definitely against them in the opener of a 3-game with the Chicago Cubs.

ESPN will carry the late-night affair beginning at 10 PM (ET), the initial mound duel pitting Jake Arrieta (10-8, 3.88) for the Cubs opposite San Francisco’s Matt Moore (3-11, 5.80). BetOnline is offering Chicago on -184 chalk, and an 8 run total is generally taxed a little more on the high side.

Moore Facing Cubs For Just 2nd Time In Career
Though he has been pitching pretty well, Arrieta has been stuck in a win-one, lose-one rut since the middle of June. He’s coming off a tough 3-0 setback at home against the Diamondbacks last Wednesday, Arrieta only allowing three hits and one earned run in seven innings while striking out eight. He missed the Giants when the clubs met in Chicago earlier, and the Cubs are 3-3 with a 2.09 ERA in his six starts vs. San Francisco, one of those assignments coming in Game 3 of last year’s NLDS.

After being rated as one of the top back-of-the-rotation pitchers entering 2017, Moore has pitched more like a bush leaguer with the G-Men winning only six of his 22 starts to leave bettors off more than 11 units against the MLB odds. Batters are hitting .293 against the southpaw with lefties swinging at a robust .380 clip. One of those left-handed batters is Anthony Rizzo who took Moore deep twice when the clubs met at Wrigley in late-May, handing him the loss in the only career matchup he’s had against Chicago.

Rivalry Trends, Mother Nature & A Free Pick
Chicago took 3-of-4 from the Giants at Wrigley in May, the totals splitting that quartet of contests. The Cubs split their two playoff meetings her last October, winning the decisive e fourth game of the NLDS. San Francisco has won the last three regular season series played at AT&T; including the 2016 postseason tilts, totals ran 6-2 O/U in 2015-16.

A cloudy morning should give way to a mostly clear afternoon and early evening, the thermometer in the low-60s at first pitch with the usual 14-16 mph west wind (out to center). If the win-lose trend continues for the Cubs in Arrieta starts, tonight is their turn to win, and with zero confidence in Moore, I’ll make my free baseball pick a run-line play
