Chris Sale has been bombed two starts in a row, but is still favored as his White Sox open a three-game series with the Angels at the Cell Monday night.

Angels-White Sox Monday Odds
As of mid-Monday morning the best line we could find on Chicago with Chris Sale was the -131 offered at YouWager, while Anaheim and Matt Shoemaker were getting +123 at JustBet. And every book on our MLB odds board listed a total on tonight's game of seven runs.

The Situation
Chicago just got swept three games in Kansas City over the weekend, losing Sunday 5-4. So the Sox have lost three series in a row, and eight of their last 10 games.

At 51-58 Chicago now sits 7.5 games from the nearest American League playoff spot.

Anaheim, meanwhile, just took two of three games at home from Baltimore, winning Sunday's rubber match 5-4 in 11 innings. So since losing six games in a row the Angels have won four of their last six.

At 59-51 Anaheim trails first-place Houston by a half-game in the AL West, but leads Baltimore by three games in the battle for the second American League wild-card spot.

This is the first meeting between these teams this season; last year the Angels took five of six games from the Sox, with the OVERS going 4-2.

Monday's Mound Match-Up
Tonight's pitching match-up is a rematch of a game played in June of last season, a 6-5 Anaheim victory.

Sale (9-7, 3.52) is 15-for-21 on quality starts this season, but just one for his last four. Last Tuesday he got nicked for seven runs in 5 1/3 innings against Tampa, and over his last four starts he's allowed 20 runs through 23 2/3 innings. Perhaps he's getting tired. On the season the big lefty has allowed 126 hits through 143 innings, walked 28 and whiffed 186, fourth-most in the Majors.

Chicago is 12-9 in Sale's starts, with the totals leaning UNDER by an 11-8 margin.

Over four career starts against Anaheim, the most recent coming in that Sox loss in June of last season, Sale has allowed just five earned runs through 29 innings; Chicago won three of those games, and three of those games played UNDER.

Shoemaker (5-7, 4.01) is eight-for-19 on quality starts, but three for his last three. Last Tuesday he tossed six scoreless innings against Cleveland, striking out 10; just before that he threw seven scoreless innings against Houston; and just before that he tossed six scoreless innings against Minnesota, also whiffing 10. Going back a little way Shoemaker has allowed a total of just seven runs over his last 37 1/3 innings. On the season Shoemaker has given up 107 hits, including 17 homers, through 110 innings, walked 27 and struck out 101.

The Angels are 9-10 in Shoe's starts, with the totals going 9-8.

In his only career start against the White Sox, back in June of last season, Shoemaker gave up four runs – three earned – and nine hits, walking none while striking out six, in that 6-5 Anaheim victory.

Monday's Batting Splits
Anaheim ranks just 24th in the Bigs this season against left-handed pitching with a .240 team batting average, and 21st with a .308 team on-base percentage.

Chicago, on the other hand, ranks 16th against righties with a .253 batting average and 22nd with a .308 team OBP.

Ballpark Totals Factor
Games played at the Cell this season are a lopsided 33-18 on the UNDERS, averaging 7.4 runs per, seventh-fewest among ML ballparks.

Angels-Sox Monday Free Picks
It would be easy to give Sale the check mark in the pitching match-up, but based on recent performance that's not quite the case. And the Angels own a slight edge in the bullpen comparison. We'll take Anaheim on the side. Also, while we're fading Sale tonight, if he returns to some of his past form this game will probably play UNDER on the total.

MLB Picks: Angels and UNDER seven runs (-102) at Pinnacle
