Among Wednesday's baseball betting options is a rematch of pitchers from just over a week ago, this time in Boston where the Red Sox look to cool off the Angels.

There were opportunities aplenty Tuesday night In Boston for the Red Sox and Los Angeles Angels to plate more runs. But the often-overlooked facet of baseball called defense got in the way.

Los Angeles used a big third inning then an RBI double from catcher Chris Iannetta in the ninth to slip past the Red Sox, 4-3. The victory guaranteed the Angels a split in this 4-game set while also maintaining their half-game lead over Oakland in the AL West.

Boston will try and slow LA when the series continues Wednesday, ESPN2 broadcasting the game nationally at 7 PM (ET). The Halos send Garrett Richards to the bump at Fenway as -140 chalk on the MLB odds. The Red Sox counter with Clay Buchholz, scoreboard bettors making their decisions on an 8.5 run total.

Richards, Buchholz In Quick Rematch
Both Richards and Buchholz were long gone from the Aug. 9 contest in Anaheim when it finally ended in the 19th inning, LA taking a 5-4 win on Albert Pujols' walk-off jack. Pujols also drove in two runs off Buchholz in the first with a double, the Boston hurler settling down to allow just one more run over the next seven frames. Richards, meanwhile, pitched into the seventh and was also charged with three runs.

Rolling with Richards and the Angels this year has put 9½ units of black ink into bettors' accounts, good enough for 5th-best in the ROI column among all MLB starters. He was a -190 home chalk against the Red Sox on Aug. 9 and again last Friday against the Rangers, and tossed a 5-hit shutout before those two assignments in LA against the Dodgers who were -115 chalk with Zack Greinke on the mound.

Boston will be trying to end a 5-game losing skid in Buchholz starts, though he has not decisioned in any of the last three outings. He had a strong start against Houston last Friday (7 IP, 2 ER, 9 K), but Red Sox relievers couldn't hold a slim lead and the Astros eventually won the game in the 10th.

Umpire Notes, Final Thoughts & A Free Pick
Mike Winters has consistently been a friend to bettors on the low side of totals for several years now, and 2014 is no exception with 12 of his 17 plate assignments never reaching the number. The Californian observed his 26th anniversary of first working a big league game just last month, and earlier this season worked a Richards road start that never even sniffed an 8 run tally.

Boston is expecting to have catcher David Ross back tonight following about a 3-week stint on the DL due to a heel injury, but the Red Sox might be without third baseman Will Middlebrooks who overstretched his right hammy in Tuesday's tilt. The Angels's lineup will be operating at full-strength with Josh Hamilton once again batting cleanup after some recent R&R.

My free MLB pick for Game 3 will focus on the pitchers, and I like this Richards-Buchholz combination to hold the scoring down in Boston.
