The most improved team in baseball in the Los Angeles Angels (71-49) take on the most disappointing teams in the MLB in the Texas Rangers (47-75). With Matt Shoemaker (10-4, 3.89) taking the mound for L.A., do the Rangers have the chance of pulling off the upset at home?

First pitch is set for 8:05 pm ET tonight at Arlington Stadium in Arlington, Texas. This game can be seen on MLB TV.

The Odds
According to 5Dimes Sportsbook, the home town Rangers are given “0” respect as the Angels are a -160 betting favorite and the total for the game is 9.5. Odds makers possibly think that the Angels can score on Texas starter Colby Lewis who has a less than appealing 5.42 ERA while his counterpart Matt Shoemaker is an up and comer.

A Trout Drought
People are so consumed by the Angels winning frequently and being 2nd in the league in runs scored that they might not have taken the time to notice that “baseball’s future”, Mike Trout, is slumping mightily. Luckily for Trout, leadoff hitter Kole Calhoun has taken matters into his own hands and has been leading the Halos.

Trout is hitting .231 with 2 HR and 10 RBI in the month of August. He’s 0 for his last 11, dropping his seasonal average to .292. I expect Trout to have a late run in store for the competition and fans alike. This young man is just too good a baseball player to stay down too long.

One Of Baseball’s Best Kept Secrets
Nobody knew that Kole Calhoun would be this good a baseball player; I sure didn’t. He’s been crushing the ball this month to the tune of .340 with 2 HR and 5 RBI. What makes Calhoun such a vital part of this offense is when players like Trout are slumping, he picks up the slack. Calhoun is 11 for his last 24 with 2 HR and 5 RBI. Right now, Colby Lewis should be worried about Calhoun just as much as the ever deadly Mike Trout. Look for Calhoun to feast off of this weak pitching tonight in Arlington.

The New Mariano Rivera
Often overlooked is the role of closer and the Angels might have solidified their chance at a World Series title when they practically stolen Huston Street from the San Diego Padres.

Street is 1-0 with an 0.82 ERA and just 1 blown save in 44 appearances. He averages a strikeout per inning and is just as important as anyone on this Angels team. Texas will need to get out to an early lead on Shoemaker because if the Halos have the lead in the 9th inning, this baby is over!

Adrian Beltre
As he’s in the latter stage of his career, Adrian Beltre just continues to get better and is making a late run for the hall of fame. After a 4 for 4 night last night, Beltre has raised his seasonal average to .321 to go along with 17 HR and 64 RBI. Beltre is closing in on some milestones. He’s 6 home runs away from the magical 400 mark and has 2558 career hits at the age of 35. 3000 hits are not out of the question. The crazy thing is that Texas is looking to dump Beltre. If so, I doubt this team will win 60 games next season.

If Shoemaker is on his game, the Angels should destroy the Rangers .

MLB Pick: Los Angeles -157 at 5Dimes – 2 Unit Play (Texas is AWFUL!)
