Series Prices - MLB odds list the Detroit Tigers -145 & Baltimore Orioles +125

Starting Pitching Probables
Game 1: Max Scherzer versus Chris Tillman

Game 2: Justin Verlander versus Wei-Yin Chen

Game 3: David Price versus Bud Norris

Game 1 Starting Pitching Preview
It would be unfair to compare the resume of Max Scherzer to that of Chris Tillman, considering the stages of both of these hurler’s careers. After all, Scherzer was the 2013 American League CY Young winner, and has gone a combined 70-24 for the Tigers in his regular season starts since 2011.

The Orioles 26-year old Chris Tillman has earned his stripes the last 2 seasons with the Orioles. Tillman has started 67-games during that time, gone a combined 29-13, and has developed into the ace of the staff.

Game 2 Starting Pitching Preview
I was quite surprised to see Justin Verlander get the start over David Price for the 2nd game of this series. The 31-year old veteran had a less than stellar season by his standards, going 15-12 with a lofty 4.54 ERA. It was a far cry from his 24-5 CY Young winning year for the Tigers in 2011. Verlander did finish the season with 2 strong outings, and that likely swayed the Tigers coaching staff into making this decision.

The Orioles 26-year old Taiwanese import Wei-Yin Chen had a solid 2014 regular season campaign, going 16-6, and posting a 3.54 ERA. Chen enters his 3rd full season with the Orioles, and has a combined 35-24 record, while posting a 3.86 ERA in 86-starts.

Game 3 Starting Pitching Preview
The Tigers were ecstatic to acquire David Price from Tampa Bay at this season’s trade deadline. It points to the quality of depth in the Tigers starting rotation when Price is your Game 3 starter. Price also won the Cy Young with Tampa Bay in 2012, going 20-5, and posting a 2.56 ERA. The southpaw has gone a combined 15-12 with a 3.26 ERA this season as a member of the Rays and Tigers. Price has displayed impeccable control this season by walking 1 per 6.5 innings pitched.

The Orioles haven’t officially announced their starter for Game 3 as of yet. My educated guess is they will opt for right-hander Bud Norris who has gone 15-8 with a 3.64 ERA in 2014. The other possibilities are Miguel Gonzalez or Kevin Gausman. The down side from an Orioles perspective, none of the 3 pitchers had much success when facing the Tigers this season.

Starting Pitching Final Analysis
Let me put things into proper perspective pertaining to the starting pitching matchups in this series. The Tigers starters in the first 3-games of this series have won 3 of the past 4 American League Cy Young awards. The Orioles will have a real dilemma in Game 3 of this series on who will get the start. Whatever that they decide, David Price will provide a huge edge for the Tigers. When chosing your MLB picks for the matchup keep in mind the decisive advantage in the starting pitching department clearly goes to the Detroit Tigers.

Series Synopsis and Prediction
This is a veteran Tigers team from top to bottom. If any of the 10-teams in this 2014 postseason can turn on the proverbial switch at this time of the year, they would be my top choice to do so. The Orioles will be without 3 key players this postseason due to injuries and a suspension. Chris Davis (suspended), Manny Machado (injury), and Matt Wieters (injury) won’t be walking through the door to participate in the ALDS. They combined to hit 43 home runs and knock in 122 runs this year.
