Starting Pitchers for Tonight
Oakland will go with veteran right-hander Jason Hammel on the mound tonight. Hammel has finally starting rounding into the form the A’s envisioned he would be, when acquiring him at the trade deadline from the Cubs. He’s seen each of his last 3-starts go under the total, posting an excellent 1.66 ERA, a 0.65 WHIP, and a 6:1 strikeout to walk ratio. One of those outings was versus these same Mariners in Oakland, and he was outstanding, allowing just 1 earned run in 8.0 innings of work, during a 6-1 Oakland win.

The Mariners will counter with their young southpaw James Paxton. All Paxton has done is go 6-3 against the money since being called up from the minors, and boasts an excellent 1.87 ERA. He’s been terrific in his last 3-starts overall, evidenced by a stellar 1.33 ERA in those outings. Paxton has allowed 2 earned runs or less in 8 of his 9-starts with the Mariners, including each of the last 7.

Monumental Tailspin for the A’s
Oakland went from a team that looked like a sure bet to win the AL West heading into August, to a team that’s currently battling for the playoff lives. Since August 10th the A’s have gone a miserable 9-21, and that includes losing 11 of their last 14. They’re coming off a 1-0 loss at the hands of Chris Sale and the White Sox on Thursday afternoon. The A’s have gone under the total in 6 of the last 8, and 10 of their last 14-games. The one statistic that’s worth noting, and I’m sure will shock many, the A’s have gone a pathetic 2-17 as a money line underdog of +100 or more in 2014.

Mariners are Right There
The Mariners enter this 3-game series a half-game behind the Tigers for the final wild card berth, and all of a sudden are just 2.0 behind the A’s for the top wild card position. They also had the luxury of an off day on Thursday. They’re coming off a disappointing sequence, losing 3 of the last 4-games at the hands of both Texas and Houston, who are the bottom two teams in the AL West. If the Mariners fail to make the playoffs, their home record of 37-38 will be a major contributor to the failure. Contrarily, they’ve gone an outstanding 42-28 on the road which has enabled them to be in the thick of things pertaining to the playoffs. The Mariners have seen just 25 of their 75 home games (33%) go over the total this season.

Final Analysis
This one has all the ear marks of a low scoring affair, with two red-hot pitchers, and neither team hitting very well over the past week or so. Both of these teams possess outstanding bullpens as well, giving us more reason to add the 'Under' to our MLB picks tonight.
