A Pretty Decent Pitching Matchup Between Reds-Angels Features Under Betting Value

Shoemaker pitching for his team

One game that is off the radar today could provide some value, Reds traveling to take on Angels in interleague play. We are going to take a look at the total for this game in order to find our MLB pick.

Cincinnati Reds
Dan Straily gets the start for Cincinnati and comes in with a 3.57 ERA and 1.12 whip but a 4.27 ERA on the road this season. Despite his ERA jumping up a bit when Cincinnati travels batters are still hitting just .224 against him on the road. He has been really good in his last five starts allowing just eight total earned runs in just under 30 innings of work and against the Rangers in his last appearance he allowed just three hits in six innings. In his last 10 starts he is given up just 17 total earned runs and in his last five road starts he has given up just 11 so it is pretty easy to see he is pitching very well this second half of the season.

Something that is even more eye-popping is that Cincinnati has won the last eight times he has taken the mound so you might want to take a look at the money line today. At the plate Cincinnati has been swinging good bats recently and are averaging over five runs per game in their last 10 contests. As well, they are hitting .307 this past week which leads the National League. That being said though I expect for them to come back to earth just a little bit today as they have to face an Angels starter that, like Straily, has been throwing well recently.

Los Angeles Angels
Matt Shoemaker takes the mound for Los Angeles with a 3.98 ERA and 1.24 whip but with an 8-13 record this season. At home he is been really good despite his poor record with a 3.10 ERA and batters hitting just over .240 against him. More recently he has been extremely good and in his last five games he has allowed just 12 total earned runs which included a tough start at Cleveland where he allowed five earned runs off of 12 hits in six innings. That tends to happen to pitchers in Cleveland though as they are one of the best home hitting teams in baseball so I will give Shoemaker a flyer on that game.

In four out of his other five starts he has allowed just seven earned runs off of 21 hits in 27 innings of work. There is no reason to think that he will come in and have a nice quality start back at home where he has pitched very well his last few starts. At the plate the Angels are still subpar across the board although they boast a .263 batting average which ranks sixth in the major leagues. Despite their good batting average though they have not been consistent in getting runs across the plate and their power numbers are not that great as they rank 19th in runs scored per game, and 25th in both total bases and home runs per contest.

Cincinnati Reds vs L.A. Angels
Odds makers have come out with a total for this game at 8 across the board. For my MLB pick I'm going to back under the total and grab some decent value like at Heritage sports +105. Both of these pitchers have shown the ability to put up zeros on the board and I expect they will be able to do so today.
