Our MLB handicapping guru examines two starting pitching matchups today in Brewers/Cubs and Mariners/A’s. This revealing MLB betting article discloses the best values and concludes with free picks.

Brewers vs. Cubs 8:05 PM ET
The Brewers will send veteran right-hander Yavoni Gallardo to the mound tonight. Gallardo has been very good in 13-starts on the road this season by posting a stellar 2.39 ERA. The Milwaukee starter has been brilliant in his last 4-starts on the road with a microscopic 0.64 ERA, and all 4 of those games went under the total. Gallardo allowed 0 earned runs in his last start at San Diego, and has gone an outstanding 17-3 against the money in his career, after not allowing an earned run in his previous outing.

The Cubs will counter with Jake Arrieta who’s turned in an outstanding season for the Cubs. Arrieta has posted a sparkling 2.89 ERA in 21-starts. He’s seen just 7 of those 21 outings go over the total. He’s been even better in 9-starts at Wrigley Field with a superb 1.86 ERA, a 0.88 WHIP, and a 4:1 strikeout to walk ratio. Arrieta has seen all 4 of his career starts versus the Brewers go under the total while posting a shining 2.84 ERA and 0.83 WHIP.

Advantage: I’m not giving either of these starting pitchers the betting edge in this matchup tonight. I do like this to be a low scoring game, and pending on the wind conditions tonight at Wrigley I would advise a wager on going under the total.

Mariners vs. A’s 10:05 PM ET
The Mariners will send their young southpaw James Paxton to the mound tonight. Paxton has been brilliant since being called up from the minors as evidenced by his tremendous 1.83 ERA in 7-starts. He’s actually been even better than that over his last 4 with a 1.18 ERA.

The A’s go with a youngster of their own in right-hander Sonny Gray. The Oakland Athletic's hurler has been dominant in 5 career starts versus the Mariners with all of those coming since 2013. In those 5-outings, he’s posted an excellent 1.10 ERA, and has gone 4-1 against the money. However, Gray has gone just 1-4 against the money in his last 5 overall with a lofty 5.06 ERA.

Advantage: There’s no denying that Sonny Gray has turned in a solid year for the A’s. The telling factor for me in this pitching matchup is these hurlers recent form. Right now James Paxton of the Mariners holds a clear edge over Sonny Gray in that category, and with such an attractive money line underdog price, Paxton’s my MLB pick when it comes to betting value, and I recommend the services of a sportsbook such as 5Dimes
