Yesterday was a huge day and we look to duplicate it as there are some good MLB pitching matchups as we take this into account when creating our MLB Picks of the Day.

Capper Catalano’s Record: 181-157 -18.95 Units
We doubled down twice yesterday and went undefeated as the Detroit/New York game with McCarthy and Porcello slid under the total and I said that the Dodgers were going to blow out the Diamondbacks on the road and it played out just the way that I had expected. 2 units on each game equals a very productive day.

Los Angeles Dodgers (75-58) vs. Arizona Diamondbacks (55-77)
Any Team Can Win On Any Given Day
Although this is true and taking the Dodgers on the road with Clayton Kershaw (15-3, 1.82) against one of the poorest teams at home in Arizona (27-41) and laying a massive amount of juice on the Dodgers would be too much of a risk for some, I’m going to ride the momentum that I’ve had lately and take Kershaw and the Dodgers at an unthinkable -213.

A Plaque Waiting in Cooperstown
Although it’s very early in Clayton Kershaw’s career and there have been pitchers such as Tim Lincecum, Jered Weaver, and Justin Verlander who appeared to be on the path to the Baseball Hall of Fame but took a detour, Kershaw doesn’t look like he’s ready to slow down and the mere mention of him puts fear into the opponents and their respective managers.

Kershaw is a pitcher that will go either 8 or 9 innings in a game and he won’t allow more than 3 runs on a bad day. He’s coming off of an outing against San Diego in which he went 8 inning while allowing 1 run on 3 hits while striking out 10 batters. This is an average game for Kershaw who has held opponents to just a .194 batting average. You add into the equation that Matt Kemp is coming off of a game in which he homered and showing signs of being the old Kemp before the injuries, this game should be an easy win for the Dodgers against a short-handed Diamondbacks squad who are sending out a decent pitcher in Wade Miley (7-9, 4.29)

Miley scares me, but not enough to deter me from taking the Dodgers as my betting MLB pick.

Atlanta Braves (68-64) vs. New York Mets (62-70)
Poor Timing
The Atlanta Braves were starting to get back in the playoff picture and have come to a standstill after losing 3 consecutive games. The National League East Division title doesn’t seem like a possibility despite Washington losing 2 straight games as the Braves trail the Nats by 7.5 games, but the Braves are just 1.5 games out of the 2nd wild card spot.

Tonight, they face the pesky Mets and starter Zack Wheeler (9-8, 3.48). At times, Wheeler can look like Cy Young and other times Wheeler looks like Anthony Young who was a former Met two decades ago that lost over 20 consecutive decisions. Which Zack Wheeler shows up tonight is the question?

Travis d’Arnaud
The Mets are coming off of a 3-2 victory over the Braves last night thanks to Juan Lagares’ home run in the 4th inning to snap a 1-1 tie and also thanks to the excellent hitting of catcher Travis d’Arnaud.

d’Arnaud was traded to the Mets two years ago in the R.A. Dickey trade. For a while it looked like the Mets got the shaft as d’Arnaud was sent to the minors, but after a trip to Las Vegas, the trade is finally starting favor the Mets as d’Arnaud is one of their hottest hitters.

On the season, d’Arnaud is hitting .232 with 12 HR and 32 RBI. You need to ignore the .232 batting average and consider how far this young man has come. New York has a reliable catcher in d’Arnaud for at least the next 10 years. Add in the power hitting of Lucas Duda and a grade A pitching staff and this team has a bright future. Look for New York to rain on Atlanta’s parade at CitiField with a big outing out of Wheeler as he faces Julio Teheran.
