Ross Benjamin discusses who has the MLB betting edge in a pair of starting pitching matchups involving the games between the Yankees/Tigers and Brewers/Padres.

Yankees vs. Tigers 7:05 PM ET
The Yankees starter Brandon McCarthy has seen each of his last 4-starts go under the total. He’s been a major contributor to those low scoring games by displaying brilliant form in those 4-starts. During those 4-outings the Yankees right-hander has posted an excellent 1.32 ERA and a better than 10:1 strikeout to walk ratio. Since coming to the Yankees from Arizona in a trade last month, McCarthy has gone 6-2 against the money with a stellar 1.90 ERA.

The Tigers hurler Rick Porcello has been in fabulous form over his past 5-starts with a 1.95 ERA and an outstanding 14:1 strikeout to walk ratio. Porcello has quietly put together a solid season in 2014 going 15-9 against the money with a very good 3.14 ERA.

Advantage: Both of these pitchers have been superb in recent starts, and it would be difficult to give one the betting edge over the other. The most logical betting advantage in this pitching matchup is to call for a low scoring game, and to place a MLB pick on going under the total.

Brewers vs. Padres 10:10 PM ET
The Brewers 25-year old rookie pitcher Jimmy Nelson has been a little shaky over his last 3-starts as evidenced by his lofty 1.53 WHIP in those outings. Nelson was called up from AAA Nashville of the Pacific Coast league last month where he was 10-2 with a stellar 1.46 ERA. In 8-starts for Milwaukee this season, Nelson has posted a respectable 4.15 ERA.

The Padres starter Tyson Ross has been an absolute stud this season by compiling a shining 2.68 ERA in 27-starts, and he’s seen just 7 of those 27 (36%) go over the total. He’s been extremely tough at pitcher friendly Petco Park in San Diego this season where he has a 1.94 ERA and seen just 2 of his 13-starts go over the total.

Advantage: With Jimmy Nelson entering tonight in shaky form in recent starts, and how dominating Tyson Ross has been at home, I’m inclined to give the Padres pitcher the betting edge in this one. It’s Tyson Ross of the Padres with the edge over Jimmy Nelson of the Brewers, and I suggest you apply this insight at a trusted sportsbook like Bookmaker
