Our MLB betting odds expert Ross Benjamin provides his daily MLB starting pitching report, and looks at 4 hurlers that will face each other on the Friday July 4th holiday card. Read this article to find out who holds the starting pitching advantage in each of these 2-games.

San Francisco Giants (Cain) vs San Diego Padres (Stults) 6:40 PM ET
The Giants starter Matt Cain enters today having gone 0-4 in his last 4 team starts with a lofty 6.29 ERA and 1.81 WHIP. Cain has gone 9-19 in his career team starts versus the Padres. However, in recent years the Giants hurler has pitched extremely well at Petco Park in San Diego. The Giants haven’t fared too well with Cain as their starting pitcher going 7-21 in their last 28 in that role. Cain has gone 1-6 in his last 7 team starts versus an opponent with a losing record, and 1-7 the last 8 when pitching on exactly 5-days rest like he will be doing today.

The Padres starter Eric Stults has gone a dismal 0-6 in his last 6 team starts with a poor 6.16 ERA and 1.47 WHIP. In those 6-outings the Padres southpaw has allowed 6 home runs in 30 2/3 innings of work. Stults is 1-1 in his 2 team starts versus the Giants in 2014 with a 6.23 ERA. In those pair of appearances he’s allowed 3 home runs in just 8 2/3 innings.

Advantage: Slight edge to Matt Cain, and only because of his success in recent years when pitching at Petco park.

Milwaukee Brewers (Lohse) vs Cincinnati Reds (Simon) 7:10 PM ET
The Brewers starter Kyle Lohse has been a very profitable 13-4 in his team starts this season with a very good 3.08 ERA and 1.08 WHIP. The Brewers have gone a stellar 22-8 in their last 30-games with Lohse as their starting pitcher. The right-handed hurler has seen his last 5-starts versus the Reds all go under the total. He’s gone a solid 8-1 in his last 9 team starts versus an opponent with a winning record.

The Reds starter Alfredo Simon is in the process of having a career year. The native of the Dominican Republic is 13-3 in his team starts on the season with a sparkling 2.81 ERA and 1.05 WHIP. Simon is 6-0 in his last 6 team starts with an impressive 2.66 ERA, a 0.98 WHIP, and a 4:1 strikeout to walk ratio.

Advantage: I deem this starting pitching matchup to be dead even, and project this to be a low scoring affair, so I recommend the Under as a viable MLB betting pick.
