The MLB odds for total wins on the season are being offered and here we take a look at the best bets to add in our MLB picks on teams that we believe will go ‘over’ the posted total.
Boston Red Sox (86 ½)
While it would appear to be a stretch for any team to catapult 16 additional wins from the previous season the Boston Red Sox are not in unfamiliar territory. Just think back to the odious “Bobby Valentine” era which lasted exactly one season and a grand total of 69 wins in 2012. All the BoSox did was notch 97 wins the following year and bring a World Series title to the Home of Champions.
We are expecting another renaissance this season as the Red Sox went from hero to zero in 2014 when injuries and poor performances plagued the defending World Champions. This season they entered free agency with a vengeance and added Hanley Ramirez as well as Pablo Sandoval to a lineup that will feature a healthy Dustin Pedroia, Shane Victorino and a rising star in Mookie Betts. While their pitching is still a bone of contention we can see this team slugging their way to 90 plus wins and a trip into the postseason.
MLB Pick: Over 86 ½ (-105) at Bovada
Seattle Mariners (86 ½)
The Mariners gave it a good go last season and barely missed the playoffs but did end the year with a respectable 87-75 record. The MLB odds on Seattle’s prospects look a bit pessimistic to me as this team is poised to take the next step and compete when October rolls around. Seattle has added the prodigious thump of Nelson Cruz’s bat to their batting order over the next four years and will have arguably the best pitcher in baseball, Felix Hernandez, leading a starting rotation that is loaded with potential coupled with a bullpen that is among the best in the business.
MLB Pick: Over 86 ½ (-130) at Bovada
Washington Nationals (93 ½)
What am I missing here? This is a club with an historic starting rotation featuring essentially four aces and a fifth starter in Doug Fister who ended the 2014 campaign with a 2.41 ERA and a 1.08 WHIP. This is the most imposing rotation since the Atlanta Braves trotted out the likes of Greg Maddux, John Smoltz and Tom Glavine et al in the late 90’s and early aughts. Max Scherzer, Stephen Strasburg, Jordan Zimmermann, Gio Gonzalez and the aforementioned Doug Fister comprise indisputably the best rotation in baseball and should get a healthy Bryce Harper to lead the offense. This team racked up 96 wins last year and with the addition of Max Scherzer the MLB odds makers believe this team is going to regress? I don’t think so. Place your MLB pick 'over.'
MLB Pick: Over 93 ½ (-130) at Bovada
San Diego Padres (84 ½)
The Padres have always been that other team but this season they will surprise - mark my words. San Diego had the fourth best team ERA in the major leagues last season but their offense was woefully anemic. However, with a new management regime come new ideas and a fresh attitude. Recently installed General Manager A.J. Preller is now sitting in the big chair and he has gone out of his way to haul in a bevy of potential power-surgers in the form of Matt Kemp, Wil Myers, Will Middlebrooks, Derek Norris and Justin Upton. I’m not saying the Padres are the next Murderer’s Row but when you factor in an already potent pitching staff that was bolstered by the signing of James Shields in the offseason then you have to sit up and take notice.
MLB Pick: Over 84 ½ (-115) at Bovada
