It’s back! After a successful campaign in the 2016 season (55-40-4 ATS, +12.00 Units, 10.22% ROI) our expert baseball handicapper, Mark Lathrop, is ready for his daily top-notch picks. Read on as he gives his prognosis on Opening Day of the 2017 MLB season.

San Francisco Giants vs Arizona Diamondbacks

The aces of each of these NL West teams take the mound to start the 2016 season, with Zack Greinke of the Diamondbacks matching up against Madison Bumgarner of the San Francisco Giants.

Let’s be honest, Spring Training is not the place to start looking for meaningful trends when it comes to sports betting. To take that one step further, I literally have not watched one pitch of Spring Training baseball this year. I just don’t care about Spring Training win-loss records and neither, should you.

However, all has not been completely lost in the last 6 weeks of play in Florida and Arizona, as you can usually tell if a pitcher’s mechanics are the same as they were in years prior. For instance, Madison Bumgarner pitched 25 innings of Spring Training ball, picking up a 2.52 ERA, .189 batting average against, and 0.88 WHIP. Even if you are an AA-ball rookie you can take a walk off of Mad-Bum, so the fact that he is peppering the zone is a good one for Giants fans.

For Arizona’s Zack Greinke his Spring has been typical, as he has a 4.65 ERA average in Spring Training in his career and put up a 5.06 ERA this year. This against a career ERA mark of 3.42. Greinke is coming into his age 33 seasons, and already we are seeing some decline in his fastball. However, I’ll take the adrenaline of opening day to get him past this just this once. Along with Bumgarner, these pitchers should twirl a low-scoring affair, so I am taking Under 7.5 runs in this game for my MLB picks.

N.Y. Yankees vs Tampa Bay Rays

In the first game of the year, a 1:10 PM local start time and pitchers throwing very well will meet the offenses of the Yankees and Tampa Bay Rays. I’m not expecting a lot of fireworks from the bats in this game.

In this game between the Yankees and Rays, both of the aces taking the mound have been on point so far in Spring Training. Even with the AL lineups and a designated hitter, it appears that the Under of 7 listed for this game still has excellent value.

For Tampa Bay, Chris Archer has been lights out all spring long. He’s pitched only 13.2 innings, yet racked up 17 strikeouts in the process. He’s also accrued a 1.98 ERA, .149 batting average against, and 0.80 WHIP. Masahiro Tanaka has been even better, picking up a 0.38 ERA, 28 K’s, .115 BAA, and 0.59 WHIP over 23.2 innings pitched. These two players are definitely ahead of schedule as compared to their offensive counterparts on the season, so I have no trouble wagering Under 7 runs in this spot.
