Now that we're into July, things will really start to heat up in the MLB as teams will want to get the jump before the All-Star Break. Here are your MLB Picks of the Day for Friday.

Chicago Cubs at New York Mets

deGrom is Da Man
I really still believe in this theory. Although New York Mets starting pitcher, Jacob deGrom (3-4, 2.67 ERA) only has 3 wins to his credit and we've hit the month of July, as you can see in person, on tv, or by his ERA of under 3.00 ERA, that he is a quality pitcher. Unfortunately for the Mets, injuries and poor offensive play have hurt them and their pitchers, who have a tremendous amount of talent, haven't been getting the proper run support and have been unable to pick up the wins as the Mets had slid to 3rd place in the National League East Division. While the Cubbies are the best team in baseball, if you can get deGrom at odds of -107 at home, it's wise to make the bet as good pitching usually wins out.

Not So Fast
Jason Hammel is a veteran that's had an average career at best, but he's really found a spot in this Cubs rotation. For the season, the 33-year-old Hammel is 7-4 with a 2.58 ERA. He started the season off so hot that he's actually lost his last 2 outings, allowing 6 runs in 11 2/3 innings. These numbers aren't too bad, but the Cubs haven't been giving Hammels the proper run support either.

In his last 4 outings, the Cubs have lost every game, Hammels is 0-3, and the Cubs offense has scored a total of 9 runs in these games. Basically, we have two pitchers that are in the same boat. However, being that Jacob deGrom is at home and in my opinion, the better pitcher, I'm leaning towards him.

On the road, Hammels sports an ERA of 2.45 and the Mets will need to get their offense going despite not having some big bats or recognizable names in their lineup.

In yesterday's game, the Mets were able to defeat the Cubs with 3 runs in the 7th inning, sparked by the hitting of Brandon Nimmo (not necessarily a household name), but the Mets will take it. Yoenis Cespedes continued to be the reliable force in this offense as he hit his 19th home run of the season to go along with 46 RBI's. Everyone knows what the deadly combination of Kris Bryant (22 HR, 60 RBI, .279 BA) and Anthony Rizzo (19 HR, 58 RBI, .284 BA) can do. It's up to Jacob deGrom to shut down this Chicago Cubs offense.

Miami Marlins at Atlanta Braves

Teheran Is On a Tear
That's what this entire bet is about. We know that the Marlins at 41-38, possess a better offense behind the hitting of Christian Yelich, Marcel Ozuna, and Giancarlo Stanton, but the lowly Braves (27-52) are starting the unstoppable force in Julio Teheran (3-7, 2.46 ERA) and Teheran has been a beast for his entire career. This game comes down to the Atlanta Braves scratching out a few runs offensively and picking up a victory.

The Backbone of the Team
Most people would say that Freddie Freeman is the backbone of the Braves, but I happen to think that Teheran is in the discussion.  In his last 2 starts, Teheran has pitched 17 scoreless innings, allowed just 6 hits, hasn't walked a hitter with his pinpoint control and struck out 14 batters. That's about as good as it get's. Efficiency at it's very best.

In his last 10 starts, Teheran hasn't allowed more than 3 runs in any start, therefore the Braves will keep this game competitive and are coming off of an 8-5 victory over the Marlins last night in a rain-delayed game. The rain played a role, but the Braves first 3 hitters in their lineup each had 2 hits.

Atlanta is starving for offense and got it after the rain delay as they scored 4 runs in the 6th inning to overtake Miami. Even though I say, Teheran is the backbone of this team, Freddie Freeman is a very key piece to the offense as he displayed with his 2-for-3 day with a triple and RBI. Freeman has raised his batting average to .285 and it's headed for .300 as he is the offense of this squad. Look for the Braves to control this game as Teheran has been unhittable. Good and solid MLB Pick here.
