Beating New York for the 13th consecutive time won’t be easy for Los Angeles, as Jacob deGrom takes the mound for the visiting Mets. It's an interesting matchup to start the 3-game series.

Are the Dodgers finally getting their act together now that September is here? Maybe we’ll see this week when they host the New York Mets for a 3-game set. Labor Day finds the Mets sending ace Jacob deGrom (8-8, 1.68) to the mound at Dodger Stadium, Los Angeles has yet to officially name its starting pitcher though everything lines up for Alex Wood (8-6, 3.42) to take his next turn in the rotation.

The Dodgers spent the middle of August in a rut with a 3-9 nosedive during one stretch, but closed the month on a 6-1 spurt and began September by beating the Diamondbacks to tie Arizona at the top of the NL West heading into their series finale on Sunday. New York went the other direction, dropping four of five to end August but favored on a -130 money line at BetOnLine to close the series in San Francisco with a dubya.

Trend Indicates Little Scoring

If New York follows its script from the last week or so, Monday’s matchup in L.A. will result in a shutout. Four of their previous games ended that way, with three more in the last nine ending with either the Mets or their opponents plating but one run. They scored 17 runs in the first five games on this road trip, but 10 of those came in one win over the Cubs with Todd Frazier driving in half of that number. deGrom has never beaten the Dodgers in seven regular-season starts, dropping an 8-3 decision as a small underdog on the baseball odds board in June.

Los Angeles has been a bit offensively challenged as well despite a nice 7-1 stretch. The Dodgers managed to score only seven runs in the first three games against Arizona, yet still won two of them with Matt Kemp delivering the big 3-run homer in Saturday’s triumph. Wood is coming off an outstanding performance in Texas, tossing seven shutout innings to beat the Rangers.

Dodgers On 12-Game Win Streak In Rivalry

In sweeping the Mets at Citi Field in June, Los Angeles upped its win streak in the rivalry to an even dozen, and it hasn’t even been close in that span with the Dodgers outscoring the New Yorkers 91-30. The 4-game broom job in L.A. last year was a boon to "over" bettors with each contest skipping past totals which ranged from 7-9.

Despite those "over" winners last season when the clubs convened in L.A., an "under" play for at least the first five innings – if not the entire game – is probably the smartest way to go. Still, I can’t ignore the Dodgers’ dominance in recent years and go with L.A. on a run-line play for my free MLB pick.
