Week after week our Last Chance Value Picks keep on clicking as we find the weakest numbers and softest spots on the NCAAF board. Let’s do it again in Week 9!

Boston College vs. Clemson (-31 ½ to -24)

Saturday, October 31st, 12 pm ET at Memorial Stadium

What’s the best quarterback in college football worth? According to those who set the college football odds, he’s worth as much as a touchdown because the line plummeted seven points on Clemson the moment it was announced that Trevor Lawrence would miss the game due to his coronavirus diagnosis.

Therefore, the Tigers will turn its lonely eyes to backup quarterback D.J. Uiagalelei, a true freshman who has completed 12-of-19 passes this season for 102 yards with no TDs and no interceptions. Want to know more? Well, here’s his bio: “a five-star recruit from football factory St. John Bosco High School in Southern California, the #1-rated pro-style quarterback and the #10 player on the 247Sports composite in the Class of 2020.”

Look, the great teams from the power conferences all have big-time talents at the quarterback position eager to replace the superstar in front of him. Did you like Tua last year at Bama? Well, how do you like Mac Jones this year? The bottom line is that BC doesn’t belong on the same field as Clemson regardless of who is under center. Only now we are getting serious value with a big chalky favorite in playing in their own sandbox.

Purdue vs. Illinois (+5 to +8)

Saturday, October 31st, 12 pm ET at Memorial Stadium

My radar never fails to ignite when a line has crawled through two key numbers, and it just so happens that’s what’s going on in this matchup between the Boilermakers and the Illini. Purdue opened as five-point road chalk but that number has risen through the magical numbers of 6, and 7, to where it sits as high as 8 over at YouWager.

The public has short-term memories and the latest mental snapshot they have of Purdue is last weekend when they pulled a nice little upset over Iowa in a 24-20 home victory. Conversely, Illinois was blown out by No. 9 Wisconsin, 45-7, and failed to cover the number for all those who backed them as 20 ½ point road pups in their college football picks.

But let’s not forget that this was the first week of the season for the Big Ten, who has arrived late to the party. Sure, Purdue won but do we really know if Iowa is even any good this season? And maybe Illinois’ loss was a combination of playing a great team on a miserable day.

What I do know is that last year the Illini were 10-point road dogs to Purdue and they came away with a 24-6 victory over the Boilermakers. The season is young, the value is there, and we are getting eight points with a conference rival at home. Pull the trigger and back Illinois.

Ohio State vs. Penn State (+9 ½ to +12)

Saturday, October 31st, 7:30 pm ET at Beaver Stadium

Penn State suffered a heartbreaking overtime loss in their season debut last week when they bowed, 36-35, to Indiana. The Nittany Lions were seven-point road favorites but couldn’t close the deal against a gritty Hoosiers’ squad that could very well be much better than most people anticipated.

While Penn State was experiencing the agony of defeat, Ohio State was enjoying the thrill of victory, and essentially making a statement to the entire world that, yes, we are as good as you thought we’d be, when they waxed the Cornhuskers, 52-17 in their season opener.

But Penn State is far removed from Nebraska and the Buckeyes won’t find the sledding nearly as easy this week. The public is comparing the two results from last week and assuming Ohio State has no peer in the conference. While that might be true, Penn State is a talented team that understands a 0-2 start is sacrilege at University Park so there is a good chance this game will be closer than many believe. Let’s grab a dozen points with the Lions at home and watch them keep it close.
