With a terrific 16-9 ATS (64%) over the past 3 weeks, Ross Benjamin is ready to give you a betting preview on Thursday’s nationally televised game between Miami and Virginia Tech. Join him for his NCAAF week 8 pick.

Miami (FL) Hurricanes vs Virginia Tech Hokies

Virginia Tech will host Miami on Thursday night at Lane Stadium in Blacksburg. The opening kickoff is slated for 7:00 PM ET, and it will be televised by ESPN. At the time of this writing (10/17), college football betting odds at Bookmaker has Virginia Tech as a 4.0-point favorite. Bookmaker is presently offering new customers 50% cash bonuses on initial deposits of up to $300.

Recent Head to Head Series

Miami has won and covered the last 2 meetings between these ACC rivals. The Hurricanes won 30-6 as a 2.5-point favorite at Virginia Tech in 2014. Miami also won 30-20 last season as a 3.0-point home favorite. Both of those games went under the total.

Disheartening Losses for Canes and Hokies

After starting the season 4-0, Miami has lost their last 2 games, and both transpired while playing at home. Two weeks ago they suffered a gut wrenching 20-19 defeat at the hands of in state bitter rival #13 Florida State, and also failed to cover as a 1.5-point favorite. Last Saturday the Canes lost 20-13 as a 6.0-point favorite to #22 North Carolina. As a result, Miami fell out of the AP Poll Top 25 rankings for a first time this season.

Virginia Tech was riding high heading into last Saturday’s game at the Carrier Dome in Syracuse. After all, they were on a 3-game win streak, ascended to a #17 national ranking, and were a prohibitive 22.0-point road favorite against a 2-3 Syracuse team which is in rebuild mode. However, that’s why they play the games. The Hokies were stunned 31-17 and allowed Syracuse’s offense to rack up 561 total yards. Similar to their opponent on Thursday, Virginia Tech also dropped out of the AP Top 25 this week.

Perfect Betting Angle and Prediction

Any college football conference away underdog of 9.0 or less (Miami), coming off a conference home favorite loss by 4 points or more, versus an opponent coming off a conference away favorite straight up loss by 4 points or more, resulted in those away underdogs going an unscathed 7-0 ATS since 1995. Those away underdogs also won all 7 of those contests straight up and did so by an average of 9.0 points per game.

Miami’s 2 losses have both came against current nationally ranked teams and were by a combined 7 points. Virginia Tech’s 2 defeats were by a cumulative 35 points. Virginia Tech has committed a lofty 14 turnovers through its first 6 games, and Miami has only coughed it up 6 times during the first half of their schedule. My lean is with the road underdog and one of my college football week 8 predictions will be further indicative of such.
